Carlos Guillen finished 2-for-3 with a triple, solo homer, two runs batted in and two runs scored for Detroit, which won despite blowing a pair of five-run leads.
Francis Beltran picked up the win by holding Pittsburgh to two hits and one run over 1 1/3 relief innings.
Raul Chavez went 2-for-2 with a solo blast and scored twice for the Pirates, who scored six runs in their final three at-bats to erase a 6-1 deficit. Kevin Thompson knocked in a pair of runs and Doug Mientkiewicz doubled twice in a losing cause.
Casey Fossum was saddled with the loss after allowing the game-winning blast.
