Catcher Kenji Johjima doubled home a run in the first inning and right fielder Mike Morse added a run-scoring single for the Mariners. Right-hander Carlos Silva tossed two scoreless innings in his first outing with the club, after he was signed to a four-year, $48 million contract during the offseason.
Reigning National League Cy Young winner Jake Peavy went two innings for the Padres, yielding two runs on four hits. Khalil Greene doubled and scored a run to lead the club at the plate.
