Eugenio Velez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Brett Harper drove in a pair of runs for the Giants, who trailed 5-4 heading to the eighth inning.
Starter Jonathan Sanchez allowed three earned runs in one inning, but Vinnie Chulk (1-0) and five other Giants relievers scattered three runs on six hits the rest of the way to hold off the Chicago rally.
