Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Marlon Byrd fell a triple shy of the cycle and scored three runs, as the Texas Rangers edged the LA Angels of Anaheim, 7-6, in the middle of a three-game set at Angel Stadium.
Byrd doubled in the second, singled in the third and added a solo homer in the fourth for Texas, which has won six of its last seven games. David Murphy added a two-run double, while Ian Kinsler chipped in with a pair of hits and knocked in a run.
Edinson Volquez (1-0) pitched well enough to get the win, allowing three runs and seven hits, with a pair of walks and four strikeouts over five innings. The 24-year-old Dominican, called up from Triple-A Oklahoma earlier in the day, was making his first major league start for the Rangers since he lasted just three innings in a loss to the Angels on September 25, 2006.
"I thought Volquez made good use of all his pitches around the strike zone," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "He looked like he had some idea out there. He went to the minors and found the strike zone. He made his pitches."
Kelvim Escobar, on the other hand, had his shortest outing of the season for the Angels, lasting just 2 2/3 innings in the start. Escobar (15-7) allowed five runs on six hits, walked four and fanned six. He had a personal four-game winning streak and a string of 10 consecutive quality starts halted.
"I couldn't get the ball down in the zone," said Escobar. "I knew I didn't have my best stuff. I never found my rhythm. They had good at-bats and made me work. They got me."
Garret Anderson homered and drove in four runs, while Howie Kendrick went 3- for-4 with two RBI for the Angels, who had a five-game win streak broken but still hold a 6 1/2 game lead over Seattle in the AL West. The Mariners dropped an afternoon affair in Toronto, 2-1.
Jamey Wright tossed three scoreless frames for Texas before Joaquin Benoit ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing a one-out double to Orlando Cabrera and a walk to Vladimir Guerrero. He was relieved by C.J. Wilson, who served up Anderson's three-run homer, making it 7-6, before recording the final two outs for his ninth save.
Escobar labored from the start, as Texas wasted a lead-off walk to Kinsler in the first before scoring a pair in the second. Byrd's ground-rule double opened the frame, and two batters later Nelson Cruz walked. Murphy's double to center plated both runners, and Escobar ran into further trouble by hitting Jason Botts. He fanned Jarrod Saltalamacchia, then walked Kinsler to load the bases before Ramon Vazquez struck out looking to end the inning.
Kendrick's RBI single in the home half put the Halos on the board, but the Rangers scored three times in their next trip to the plate.
Michael Young singled, Byrd followed him with a base hit and both came home on Brad Wilkerson's double to the gap in left-center. A pair of strikeouts sandwiched a walk to Murphy, and Saltalamacchia ended Escobar's day with an RBI single to center that made it a 5-1 game.
Dustin Moseley came in from the 'pen, retiring Kinsler on a ground ball for the third out.
Byrd's solo homer in the fourth gave Texas a five-run cushion, but LA didn't go away. Kendrick's run-scoring double in the home half, combined with a sac fly from Anderson in the fifth cut it 6-3.
Kinsler added an RBI triple in the sixth to score Saltalamacchia, who had singled to left.
