Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Troy Glaus hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in the second of a three-game series at Rogers Centre.
Glaus had two hits with a walk and Frank Thomas chipped in with three hits for the Blue Jays, who have won two straight and four of their last five.
Dustin McGowan (9-8), who earned the win for the Blue Jays, had a superb outing. The big right-hander surrendered one run on six hits, struck out three and walked a batter over eight innings. Jeremy Accardo earned his 27th save of the season.
Ichiro Suzuki finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Ben Broussard had two hits, including a double for the Mariners, who have lost eight straight games and are currently two games behind the New York Yankees in the race for the AL wild card.
Miguel Batista started for the Mariners and pitched seven solid innings, giving up one run on five hits, while striking out seven and walking three. Sean Green (5-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
After some outstanding pitching by both starters through six and a half innings, the Blue Jays finally put a run on the board when Gregg Zaun led off the seventh with a solo home run to right to give the home team the slim advantage.
Toronto's lead was short-lived, as the Mariners tied the score in the top of the eighth. Jamie Burke reached base with a leadoff single and was replaced by pinch-runner Charlton Jimerson, who stole second. Following a ground out by Yuniesky Betancourt, Suzuki hit a base hit up the middle make it a 1-1 game.
The Blue Jays came back in the bottom of the eighth when Alex Rios walked with nobody out and Thomas followed with a single, putting runners on first and second. Glaus then grounded a run-scoring base hit up the middle giving Toronto a 2-1 lead. The Jays were bidding for more, but Russ Adams, pinch- running for Thomas, was caught stealing third, Aaron Hill grounded into a force out and Lyle Overbay struck out the end the frame.
Accardo came in for the ninth and after hitting Jose Guillen with a pitch, settled down to get Raul Ibanez to ground into a 4-6-3 double play and struck out Adrian Beltre to end the game.
