Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Paul Byrd posted his second four-hit shutout of the season, as the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians extended their winning streak to a eight games with a 7-0 win over the road- challenged Chicago White Sox.
Byrd (14-5), who has won each of his last four starts, walked only two batters with three strikeouts.
Franklin Gutierrez and Kelly Shoppach both homered for Cleveland, which got its first eight-game win streak since a nine-game run from June 10-19, 2005. The Indians maintained their lead atop the division at 5 1/2 games over Detroit, which downed Oakland 6-1 on Saturday.
Jerry Owens had two hits for Chicago, which has now lost 11 consecutive road games, having not dropped 12 in a row away from home since June 10-July 6, 1962. Javier Vazquez (11-8) allowed four runs - three earned - on eight hits with six strikeouts and a walk over six innings for the Sox, who lost their fifth straight overall.
Cleveland scored a run in the third when Shoppach grounded a lead-off single, Grady Sizemore walked, Asdrubal Cabrera bunted them into scoring position, and Shoppach came home on Travis Hafner's groundout.
The Indians plated a pair of runs in the fourth sparked by Gutierrez's solo shot to right-center field on the first pitch he saw for his 10th longball of the year. Kenny Lofton then doubled and scored on a Casey Blake single.
Cleveland scored a run in the sixth when Jhonny Peralta singled, raced to second on a passed ball, and scored on Blake's single.
The Indians plated another run in the seventh off reliever Matt Thornton, who surrendered two straight doubles to Cabrera and Hafner.
After Lofton walked, Shoppach's two-run homer to left field on an 0-1 offering from reliever Ryan Bukvich padded Cleveland's lead in the eighth.
Chicago mounted its only threat with one out in the ninth when Juan Uribe and Owens singled before Josh Fields walked to load the bases for Jim Thome, who struck out looking followed by a Paul Konerko game-ending flyout.
