National League Game Summary - Washington at Pittsburgh

Final Score: Washington 3 - Pittsburgh 2 Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Jose Flores hit a two-run home run and Felipe Lopez knocked in a run as the Washington Nationals held on to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, salvaging a win in the three-game series at PNC Park. Dmitri Young contributed with a pair of hits and scored a run and closer Chad Cordero recorded his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth for the Nationals, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Mike Bacsik (2-5) earned the win, pitching six strong innings, giving up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits. The left-hander struck out a pair and walked one. "Its fun," Bacsik said. "I got to go out there and throw minimal pitches and let my defense work behind me. We got an early lead and our bullpen did a great job holding onto it." Jack Wilson and Ryan Doumit each drove in runs on sacrifice flies for Pittsburgh, which had its brief two game winning streak snapped. Paul Maholm (4-11) turned in a quality start, allowing three runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking one over seven innings. After some solid pitching in the early going, the Nationals got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Washington loaded the bases on three straight singles by Young, Austin Kearns and Lopez with nobody out and Robert Fick grounded out to plate Young, giving the visitors the early advantage. Maholm then settled down to get the next two batters to ground out to prevent further damage. The Nats added to their lead in the sixth inning when Fick singled with two outs and Flores followed with a two-run homer that barely cleared the left field fence, making it 3-0. "Its hard to take when one pitch could have changed the whole game," Maholm said. " It wasnt the right pitch in that situation. Its one of those things you learn from." Pittsburgh got two runs back in the eighth inning. Adam LaRoche singled and Jose Castillo doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. After Luis Ayala was brought in to replace Bacsik, Wilson's sacrifice fly cut the Pirates deficit to 3-1, with Castillo advancing to second. Doumit came off the bench to pinch hit for Maholm and delivered a sac fly to left, getting the home team back to within a run. Cordero came in for the ninth and after surrendering a lead-off single to LaRoche, the right-hander struck out Castillo and got Ronny Paulino to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
