Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Kameron Loe scattered six hits and one run in
six innings, leading Texas to a 2-1 win over Boston in the third act of a
four-game set at Fenway Park.
Loe (5-6) won his fourth straight decision, while four relievers combined to
hold the Red Sox to three hits over the final three innings.
"I thought he was excellent," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "I thought
he went out there knowing that he had to get ground balls and he did that. He
made pitches when he had to and he also fielded his position very well, which
was quite important to do. He kept us in the ball game and he did his job."
Brad Wilkerson had an RBI double for the Rangers, who have won two in a row.
Kenny Lofton, Ramon Vazquez and Michael Young all hit safely twice.
Julian Tavarez (5-6) took the loss, allowing seven hits and one earned run in
5 2/3 frames.
Kevin Youkilis went 2-for-4 with a run-scoring single for the Red Sox, losers
of two straight and five of six. Dustin Pedroia and Jason Varitek also had a
pair of hits.
Texas went ahead in the fourth, as Drew dropped Marlon Byrd's liner to right
to allow Sammy Sosa to score. Sosa had singled and moved to second on Alex
Cora's fielding error before the run.
The Sox tied the game in the fifth on Youkilis' RBI single, but the Rangers
went up 2-1 when Wilkerson rapped a double off the Monster to score Frank
Catalanotto, who started the inning with a walk.
Boston failed to get a run home with runners on first and second in the
seventh, then could not net a tying run with two men on and two out in the
eighth.
Eric Gagne gave up a walk but nothing else against the Sox in the ninth,
earning his 10th save by nailing down the Rangers' second straight one-run win
over the AL East leaders.
"You go through cycles where it seems like scoring runs is very difficult,"
Sox manager Terry Francona said. "You go through the periods where we are
whacking it all over the ball park. I hope that cycle starts (Monday)."
