Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Ryan Ludwick homered twice and drove in
four runs as St. Louis dumped Cincinnati, 11-7, in a wild affair at
Great American Ball Park.
Chris Duncan was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Cards, who won two of
three in the set. So Taguchi was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Mike Maroth was ineffective in his second start with St. Louis. The starter
lasted just three innings and surrendered five runs on six hits. Troy Percival
got the win (2-0) after allowing a run in an inning of relief.
Ken Griffey Jr. was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer for the Reds, who have lost
six of eight games. Brandon Phillips chipped in with a two-run homer for
Cincinnati.
Homer Bailey (2-2) was touched for seven runs on seven hits in just 3 2/3
innings of work.
The Cards jumped on top with a run in the first. Taguchi led off with a
single, moved to third on a Bailey error and scored on Albert Pujols'
sacrifice fly to right.
The Reds quickly answered in the home half. Norris Hopper got on with an
infield single and Phillips followed by belting his 15th home run of the year
over the wall in center to make it 2-1.
The see-saw continued in the second as St. Louis put up another pair. Adam
Kennedy walked, moved to third on Gary Bennett's two-bagger and crossed the
plate on Taguchi's RBI single up the middle. Aaron Miles finished the frame
with a sac fly to make it a 3-2 game.
Ludwick extended the Cards lead in the third with a solo homer to center, his
fifth of the year. But, the Reds answered again with three runs in the bottom
of the inning to go back on top, 5-4. Hopper and Phillips got on with
consecutive bunt singles and Griffey followed with a three-run homer to
center, his 22nd of the year and 585th of his career.
The fireworks continued and St. Louis put a four-spot on the board in the
fourth to jump back in front, 8-5. Bailey got in trouble by issuing
consecutive two-out walks to Pujols and Duncan. Scott Rolen followed with an
RBI single to even things and the Reds lifted Bailey for Ricky Stone. But,
Ludwick greeted Stone with a a three-run shot to center, his second homer of
the game.
The Reds got one back in the fifth when Jeff Conine chased Phillips home with
a sac fly to left.
St. Louis forged some breathing room in the sixth when Duncan connected on a
two-run home run, his 15th of the year. After Pujols got on with a one-out
single, Duncan ripped a pitch over the wall in right.
David Ross' solo shot in the bottom of the sixth, his 13th on the season, made
it 10-7.
Taguchi scored on a Pujols' double-play ground out in the eighth to account
for the final margin.
