Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Jack Cust homered and drove in four runs as
Oakland trounced New York, 11-5, in the finale of a three-game set at Yankee
Stadium.
Cust was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and a run-scoring double for the
Athletics, who won for just the third time in 10 games. Dan Johnson added a
two-run home run and Eric Chavez drove in three runs.
Dan Haren (10-2) wasn't that effective but remained perfect against New York
and won his 10th consecutive decision. The right-hander allowed five runs on
eight hits in 5 1/3 innings but took advantage of a potent A's lineup to run
his record to 4-0 versus the Yankees.
Andy Phillips was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the reeling Yankees, who have lost
six of seven games and nine of 11. Bobby Abreu also drove in a pair of runs.
The lifeless Andy Pettitte (4-6) was rocked for eight runs on nine hits in
just 1 2/3 innings en route to the loss.
"He [Pettitte] has been through it before," Cust said. "He's definitely let up
runs early and pitched through it. We kept on him and got him out of there
early. He's a great pitcher, and we're just lucky he didn't settle down."
The Athletics jumped on top with a run in the first. Mark Ellis got on with a
one-out single and moved the third on Cust's single after Abreu booted the
ball in right. Chavez then grounded in to a fielder's choice to score the run.
"The first four or five I didn't hit it square," Pettitte said. "My mindset is
keep battling through it, keep making pitches. I felt great. Everything felt
good, but the ball was getting back to the middle of the plate. They made me
pay for it."
Oakland looked like they broke it open with a seven-run second. The A's
quickly loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Bobby Crosby, Jason
Kendall and Mark Kotsay. Kurt Suzuki slapped another single to plate Crosby.
After Shannon Stewart flied out, Ellis lofted a sacrifice fly to right to make
it 3-0. Cust followed by clearing the bases with a prodigious three-run home
run to center. Chavez continued Pettitte's nightmare by lacing a double to
right and Johnson capped the frame with a two-run blast to make it an 8-0
game.
The Yankees got on the board with a pair of runs in the home-half. Alex
Rodriguez walked, moved to second on a Jorge Posada single, advanced to third
when Hideki Matsui grounded into a fielder's choice and crossed the plate on
an Abreu ground ball. Phillips made it 8-2 with an RBI single to left.
New York kept chipping away with two more runs in the fourth. Posada walked,
moved to third on Matsui's ground-rule double and crossed the plate on Abreu's
sac fly to left. Phillips slapped another RBI single to make it an 8-4 game.
The Yankees climbed within three runs in the sixth on Derek Jeter's run-
scoring single.
The A's struck back to make it 9-5 in the seventh. Ellis singled to right and
Cust slapped an RBI double off Mike Myers.
Chavez's two-run single in the eighth accounted for the final margin.
