Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Lance Berkman hit a two-run home run and had
four RBI as the Houston Astros hammered the Colorado Rockies, 12-0, winning
the rubber game in a three-game set at Minute Maid Park.
Luke Scott added a two-run shot and knocked in three and Mike Lamb contributed
with three hits and two RBI for the Astros, who have won three of their last
four. Hunter Pence had four hits and three runs scored and also drove in a
run.
Wandy Rodriguez (5-7) turned in a solid effort, giving up only three hits,
while striking out four and walking a pair in seven innings of play.
Matt Holliday finished 1-for-2 with a double for Colorado, which has lost
nine of its last 10 contests.
Rodrigo Lopez (4-2) was ineffective in taking the loss, allowing six runs on
eight hits in four innings of work. He also walked three batters and did not
record a strikeout.
Houston waisted little time, putting a pair of runs on the board in the
second. Brad Ausmus and Rodriguez walked to lead off the frame and after Chris
Burke grounded into a fielders choice, leaving runners at first and second,
Pence followed with an RBI ground-rule double. Berkman was then intentionally
walked and Carlos Lee's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
The Astros added to their lead in the fourth inning when Lamb led off with a
triple to center field and scored on a ground out by Scott. Ausmus then
singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez and scored on
Burke's single, upping the lead to 4-0. The home team wasn't finished as
Berkman's double chased home two more runs.
Scott's two-run homer, his 10th of the season in the fifth, made it 8-0.
Houston continued to pile it on in the sixth inning when Berkman's two-run
shot to left-center increased the lead to 10-0.
Lamb's two-run bases loaded single in the eighth accounted for the 12-0 final
score.
