Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Matt Morris flirted with a no-hitter on
the mound and also had his first career three-hit game at the plate, as the
San Francisco Giants routed the Philadelphia Phillies, 13-0, at Citizens Bank
Park.
Making the 250th start of his major league career, Morris (6-2) carried a no-
hit bid into the sixth before yielding a two-out single to Shane Victorino.
The right-hander, who was removed after that frame, threw 93 pitches, 55 for
strikes, with three walks and three strikeouts.
Fred Lewis hit his first career grand slam, while Ray Durham and Pedro Feliz
each had three-run homers for the Giants, who have won two of their last
three games. Morris contributed two singles and a double and finished the
night 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Barry Bonds went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run-scoring double before
leaving for a pinch runner in the fifth inning. Bonds is sitting on 746 career
home runs, 10 shy of passing Hank Aaron as baseball's all-time home run champ.
Adam Eaton (5-4) had his shortest outing in a Phillies uniform thus far, as he
was shelled for five runs on six hits in just two innings of work. He walked
four, struck out a batter and threw 60 pitches, just 31 for strikes, as the
Phillies dropped their fourth straight game.
After pitching out of trouble in the first, the second inning quickly
unraveled for Eaton. Eliezer Alfonzo hit a one-out single to left, and Omar
Vizquel walked. Then, with Morris at the plate and appearing to bunt through a
pitch on a 2-2 count, Alfonzo was picked off at second, but Morris was not
called out at home plate. Phils' manager Charlie Manuel argued the call and
was promptly ejected, before Morris reached on a single to keep the inning
alive.
Randy Winn followed with a walk to load the bases and Lewis worked a full
count before hammering a pitch over the wall in left for a grand slam. Mark
Sweeney then drew a free pass and scored on Bonds' double to center for a 5-0
cushion.
Durham's three-run homer off Mike Zagurski put the Giants up 8-0 in the
fourth, and the rout continued in a five-run fifth.
Morris stroked a leadoff double to center and later scored on an infield
single by Sweeney, while Durham grounded into a force out with the bases
loaded to make it 10-0. Feliz then ripped a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left
for a three-run shot and a 13-0 advantage.
Victorino's single broke up the no-hit bid in the sixth, while Carlos Ruiz's
single in the eighth accounted for the Phils' only other hit.
