Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Jorge Posada went 2-for-5 with two doubles and
three RBI to pace the New York Yankees over the Boston Red Sox, 9-5, in the
first of three weekend games between these bitter rivals at Fenway Park.
Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer and scored twice for the Yankees, who
have won two straight following a five-game skid to climb out of last place in
the AL East, but they're 12 1/2 games behind first-place Boston. Bobby Abreu
picked up a pair of doubles and scored twice, Johnny Damon and Melky Cabrera
also drove in a run each and Alex Rodriguez scored twice.
Chien-Ming Wang (4-4) gave up 10 hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings in the
start for New York. Scott Proctor was charged with a run in one-third of an
inning in relief before being ejected after throwing at Kevin Youkilis in the
ninth inning.
"Wang hasn't had a great deal of success against this club and they are a good
hitting ball club which has had some good luck against him," said Yankees
manager Joe Torre, who was ejected after continuing an argument on Abreu's
failed steal in the top of the fifth inning. "But what I admire most about him
tonight was that he kept battling."
Tim Wakefield (5-6) yielded five hits and eight runs over 3 2/3 innings,
striking out two, but walking six. Kyle Snyder gave up three hits and one run
with two walks in his inning of relief.
"I just didn't have it tonight," Wakefield said. "I felt good in the first.
Got through 1-2-3 and then in the second, out of the stretch, I didn't feel
comfortable, never could find any rhythm and then 1-2-3 in the third and in
the fourth just all over the place."
Manny Ramirez finished 4-for-5 with an RBI single for the Red Sox, who have
lost two in a row after a five-game win streak. Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-4
with two doubles, an RBI, and scored once, while David Ortiz picked up three
hits, scored a run and also drove one in.
Pedroia's double down the line in left tied the game, 3-3, with one out in the
third, but the Yankees pulled away in the fourth by scoring six runs.
Cano singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, Abreu walked then Josh
Phelps was hit by a pitch. Wakefield's wild pitch to score Cano put the
Yankees up 4-3. Cabrera dropped a single into center to make it 5-3, then
another passed ball, with Damon at the plate, brought home another run. Damon
popped out and Derek Jeter grounded out, but Hideki Matsui walked. Kyle Snyder
entered for Wakefield, and hit Rodriguez with a pitch to load the bases.
Posada followed with a bases-clearing double to center which made it a 9-3
game.
Youkilis extended his hitting streak to 23 games with an infield single with
two out in the sixth, but the Sox still could not make up any ground down
by six runs.
Both benches emptied when Proctor was ejected by home plate umpire Brian
O'Nora for throwing at Youkilis' head with one out in the bottom of the ninth,
possibly in retaliation for Red Sox pitcher Javier Lopez hitting Cano in the
top half of the inning.
"In that situation you're trying to get three quick outs and get out of here,"
Proctor said. "Especially the way we are playing. Unfortunately the ball got
away from me and I can understand why Youkilis is mad."
It proved to be a catalyst for the slumbering Sox, who made it 9-4 when
Ramirez rapped a long single off the Green Monster to plate Youkilis. It was
9-5 as Ortiz scored when Wily Mo Pena beat out a possible game-ending double-
play grounder, but the rally ended as Eric Hinske grounded out to second to
end the game.
"What happens happened. It stays on the field, it stayed on the field, and
that's it," Youkilis said. "It's gonna happen every once in a while. I get hit
all the time. But you're never happy if the ball's coming at your head."
The start of the game was delayed 25 minutes by a ceremony to honor the 1967
AL champion "Impossible Dream" team, and it may have had an effect on
Wakefield, who gave up three runs to the Yanks in the second on Cano's two-run
homer over the Green Monster and a bases-loaded walk to Damon.
Boston got a pair of runs back in the second, on Julio Lugo's RBI groundout to
second and an Ortiz run-scoring single.
