Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Russell Martin homered in his third straight
game, belting a solo shot in the fifth to put the Dodgers up for good, as Los
Angeles edged Pittsburgh, 5-4, in the opener of a four-game set at PNC Park.
Randy Wolf (7-3), who won his fourth straight decision, allowed four runs on
seven hits, while walking two and striking out three in five innings. Chad
Billingsley, Joe Beimel and Takashi Saito combined for four scoreless innings.
Saito pitched 1 2/3 innings for his 16th save in as many opportunities.
"I'll take 'em any way I can get 'em," said Wolf. "I'm not picky. Of course
you'd much rather pitch well... a complete game shutout. It wasn't pretty but
luckily we had some big hits today and the bullpen did an amazing job."
Tony Abreu went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Dodgers, who
have won seven of their last nine games and are in a virtual tie atop the NL
West with Arizona, four percentage points ahead of the Diamondbacks.
Pittsburgh starter Zach Duke (2-6) surrendered five runs on eight hits, while
walking two and striking out three over six frames. Salomon Torres, demoted
from the closer's role earlier in the day, followed Duke by retiring all six
batters he faced.
"They're not taking into consideration what I want," said Torres when asked
what role he'd like. "They try to use me in whatever spot they think I'm best
suited for to help the team."
Jason Bay hit his ninth homer of the season and Chris Duffy had a two-RBI
triple for the Pirates, who have lost four of five.
Martin led off the fifth inning with his sixth homer of the year, a shot to
center field, and the Dodger pitching staff held the Pirates scoreless the
rest of the way.
Pittsburgh scored one in the first. Ronny Paulino singled, advanced to second
on Freddy Sanchez's ground-rule double and scored on Bay's double to center.
The Dodgers evened the score in the second on Andre Ethier's two-out double to
left, scoring Abreu who had singled one batter earlier.
Bay's one-out, solo home run into the seats in right in the third, put the
Pirates ahead, but the Dodgers took the lead in the top of the fourth. After
Olmedo Saenz walked and Luis Gonzalez doubled, Abreu doubled to left-center,
giving Los Angeles a one-run lead.
Rafael Furcal's infield single later in the frame extended the lead to 4-2.
The Pirates tied it at 4-4 in the home half when Duffy tripled to right,
scoring Paulino, who had singled, and Jose Bautista, who had walked.
