Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Ryan Braun had three hits, including a two-
run homer, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Florida Marlins, 8-5, in the
second game of a four-game series at Miller Park.
Braun also doubled and singled while playing in just his eighth game in the
majors. Braun's contract was purchased from Triple-A Nashville on May 24.
"I think I stayed within myself a little today, swung at some pitches I was
able to drive and glad the team was able to win," said Braun. "More than
anything I feel situated, and I'm able to focus on baseball instead of having
to worry about other things. Lately I've been trying a little too hard and my
pitch selection has suffered a little bit because of it. I've got to get back
to make sure I swing at strikes."
Kevin Mench added a three-run double and finished the night with four RBI for
Milwaukee, which has won three of its last four games on the heels of a six-
game slide. Tony Graffanino also chipped in with a two-run double.
Jeff Suppan (7-5) yielded four runs on six hits over seven innings, walking
three and fanning two in the victory. The right-hander has received a decision
in each of his last 12 starts this season.
Dan Uggla and Hanley Ramirez both hit solo homers for the Marlins, who have
dropped the first two games of this set after sweeping the Cubs. Scott Olsen
(4-5) was roughed up for five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings in the loss.
The lefty walked three and fanned two.
Florida opened up a 1-0 lead in the first on Uggla's one-out homer to left,
then added a run in the third when Ramirez launched a solo home run to
center.
Milwaukee, however, put up a three spot in the fourth to take the lead. Braun
drew a leadoff walk, and after Prince Fielder flied out, Johnny Estrada and
Bill Hall both singled. Mench's sacrifice fly scored Braun to cut it to 2-1,
and Graffanino followed with a two-run double for a 3-2 lead. Graffanino was
thrown out trying to reach third to end the inning.
The Brewers added two more in the fifth on Braun's two-out, two-run homer to
center.
Florida fought back with a pair of runs in the seventh, as Uggla's sacrifice
fly plated Aaron Boone, and Ramirez followed with an RBI single that chased
home Alfredo Amezaga to cut it to 5-4.
Mench connected with a three-run double off Justin Miller in the bottom of the
frame to boost Milwaukee to an 8-4 lead.
The Marlins got a run in the ninth when Amezaga walked, advanced on a single
by Ramirez and came around to score on a throwing error by Braun. Francisco
Cordero came on to get the final out and record his 20th save.
"We've got to finish the innings," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez. "We
can't let them linger around. We didn't do that today. We're just having
trouble closing innings out right now."
