Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Javier Vazquez outpitched A.J. Burnett and his
season-high 12-strikeouts to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 win over the
Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a four-game set.
Vazquez (3-3) held Toronto to six hits through eight innings, fanning five and
walking two. Jerry Owens, just called up from Triple-A Charlotte to replace
the injured Darin Erstad, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Tadahito
Iguchi hit two RBI singles for the White Sox, who snapped a five-game losing
skid.
Vazquez's performance was a welcome reprieve for the White Sox, as Chicago
starting pitchers have gone 0-5 with a 7.17 ERA in the last seven games.
Bobby Jenks set the Blue Jays down in order in the ninth for his 15th save.
Burnett (5-5) dominated for the most part, scattering six hits and one walk
over 7 1/3 innings, but was touched up for two runs in the third and one in
the eighth, more than enough on a night when Vazquez, though not as flashy,
was virtually unhittable. The Blue Jays have dropped two of three.
Juan Uribe hit a one-out single in the third, and moved to third on Owens'
double to left. With Iguchi at the plate, a Jason Phillips passed ball
allowed Uribe to cross home. Iguchi followed up with a single to bring home
Owens, and hand the White Sox a 2-0 lead.
Burnett settled down in a big way, though, retiring 15 of 16 batters until he
ran into trouble in the eighth. Owens legged out an infield single, stole
second, and scored on another Iguchi single, giving the White Sox an
insurance run and sending Burnett to the showers.
Toronto threatened in the eighth. After retiring the first two batters,
Vazquez gave up a double to pinch-hitter Howie Clark, and a single by Alex
Rios put runners at the corners. He got Lyle Overbay to fly out to right,
however, ending the inning.
