Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Brandon Webb struck out eight batters over
eight solid innings as Arizona stretched its winning streak to eight with a
5-1 victory over the Mets in the opener of a three-game series.
Stephen Drew and Chris Snyder homered to provide Arizona all its runs. The
Diamondbacks, winners in 11 of their last 13 games, are on their longest
victory surge since capturing 12 in a row from June 18 - June 30, 2003.
Webb (5-3) allowed just four hits and an unearned run while walking one batter
to move to 2-6 lifetime against the Mets. The reigning NL Cy Young Award
winner has sparkled in four starts at Shea Stadium with a 2-1 record and a
0.31 ERA.
"He was outstanding. He had his two-seamer working. His secondary pitches were
great," Snyder said of Webb. "He threw them when he needed to and got ground
balls when he needed to. It was a great job."
John Maine (6-3) lost for the third time in four starts after yielding five
hits and two runs over six innings. He fanned seven without issuing a walk.
Ruben Gotay singled in the lone run for the Mets, who lost for just the second
time in seven contests and saw their lead in the NL East trimmed to 3 1/2
games over Atlanta.
The Mets were without center fielder Carlos Beltran and third baseman David
Wright. Beltran left Thursday's game against the San Francisco Giants after a
first-inning collision and had an MRI on his bruised right knee Friday. The
results were negative and he is listed as day-to-day. Wright was a late
scratch from the starting lineup, complaining of back spasms.
New York left a runner at second base in the second and Jose Reyes was caught
stealing in the third.
Conor Jackson doubled, but was left stranded at third in the top of the fourth
before the Diamondbacks went ahead in the fifth. Carlos Quentin doubled with
one out and Snyder followed with a homer to left field on a 1-2 pitch.
"It was a bad pitch. He did what he was supposed to do with it," Maine said.
Reyes bunted for a hit in the sixth and stole second, but Webb continued
pitching shutout ball as he fanned Endy Chavez to end the inning.
"I didn't get a chance to throw yesterday, didn't really feel as well as what
happened out there," said Webb, who admitted he was a bit ill in recent days.
"I was able to throw my pitches well where I wanted them. I mixed in a lot of
curve balls for first-pitch strikes."
Orlando Hudson and Mark Reynolds singled with two down in the eighth before
Drew belted a towering homer to right field off Guillermo Mota.
"I think that really sealed it for us," Snyder said. "That's what we've been
doing lately, coming up with the big hit. It's been good to see."
The Mets scratched out a run in the bottom of the frame. David Newhan singled
and advanced to second on a throwing error by Reynolds at third base. With two
down, Gotay slapped a pinch-hit single beyond a diving Jackson at first base
for a 5-1 margin.
Brandon Lyon walked Chavez to start the bottom of the ninth, but retired the
next three batters with Paul Lo Duca lining out a diving Quentin in right
field to end the game.
