(Sports Network) -- Even in a season filled with low points, the Seattle Mariners may have managed to finally hit rock bottom.
The current owners of baseball's worst record will attempt to break out of a 10-game losing streak in this afternoon's last of three straight meetings with the Oakland Athletics from McAfee Coliseum.
Oakland kept the Mariners' string of futility intact by rallying for four unanswered runs to post an 8-7 victory on Saturday. The winning tally came during the bottom of the eighth inning, when Daric Barton's single brought home Carlos Gonzalez.
Jeff Baisley had two hits and four RBI for the Athletics, while Rob Bowen delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning that knotted the score at 7-7.
Huston Street (7-5) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief work, while Brad Ziegler nailed down Oakland's sixth triumph in seven games with a shutout ninth.
Kenji Johjima and Bryan LaHair each had two-run homers for Seattle, with Johjima ending 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Mariners reliever Justin Thomas (0-1) took the loss after giving up Barton's go-ahead hit in the eighth.
Seattle is now in its longest skid since a 10-game slide from August 10-20, 2006. The club record for consecutive losses is 14, set from September 2-18, 1992.
On a more positive note, Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki singled in the third inning and has now hit safely in 13 games. The perennial All-Star is batting .364 (20-for-55) during his run.
Seattle turns to youngster Brandon Morrow this afternoon in hopes of ending its excruciatingly-long winless streak. The former late-inning reliever has been given an audition in a starting role this month, but the results have been mixed so far.
In his first major league start, Morrow took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and limited the Yankees to one run on only one hit over 7 2/3 frames in a 3-1 Mariners' victory on September 5. Since that stellar outing, the former first-round draft choice has surrendered eight runs in nine innings during back-to-back road losses to the Angels and Kansas City.
Morrow had 10 saves and an excellent 1.47 earned run average in 40 appearances out of the bullpen before making the switch, but he's just 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA so far as a starter.
The 24-year-old has made 12 career relief appearances against Oakland and has no record and a 5.23 ERA along with one save.
Oakland counters with rookie Sean Gallagher, who's been outstanding in two starts since coming off a three-week stint on the disabled list.
The 22-year-old threw four shutout innings at Detroit on September 10, his first start after missing some time with shoulder fatigue. He followed up by holding the Angels to one run on four hits without a walk over seven frames to earn his first win since July 11.
Gallagher is 2-2 with a 5.16 ERA in nine starts with the A's, who acquired the right-hander from the Cubs on July 8 in the trade that sent Rich Harden to the Cubs. His only career appearance against Seattle came with the Cubs last season, with Gallagher retiring the only batter he faced.
Oakland holds a 9-6 advantage in this year's season series between the teams, with Seattle winning 14 of its 19 encounters with the A's a year ago. The Mariners have lost in five of their eight visits to the Coliseum so far in 2008.
