(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox continue their push towards the postseason this evening when they play the third test of their four-game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Chicago helped its cause immensely on Tuesday, as Gavin Floyd tossed seven effective innings and Juan Uribe had three hits and drove in two runs, lifting the White Sox to a 6-2 win.
Floyd (16-7) gave up two runs on nine hits to get the sixth win in his past seven decisions. Floyd also struck out four and walked none for the White Sox, who have won three of four and now own a 2 1/2-game lead over Minnesota atop the AL Central. The Twins lost to Cleveland, 12-9, in the 11th inning on Tuesday.
Ken Griffey Jr. finished with two hits and an RBI, while Paul Konerko returned to the lineup after suffering a sprained knee earlier this month, and went 2- for-4 with an RBI.
Derek Jeter highlighted the night for the Yankees, as he went 2-for-3 to break a tie with Lou Gehrig for most hits all-time at 85-year-old Yankee Stadium, which will host its last game on Sunday. The two hits give Jeter 1,271 to Gehrig's 1,269.
Andy Pettitte (13-14) continued to struggle, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings for his fifth consecutive loss. Jason Giambi homered, while Johnny Damon went 3-for-5 with an RBI for New York, which had won three in a row.
Heading to the hill for the Yankees tonight will be 22-year-old right-hander Phil Hughes, who is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts this season. Hughes hasn't pitched in the big leagues since a home loss to Detroit on April 29 that he had to leave with a stress fracture in his rib.
After recovering from the injury Hughes spent time at Triple-A Scranton, where he went 1-0 with a 5.90 ERA in six appearances. However, he led the Scranton team to an International League title on Friday with 12 strikeouts in five innings.
Chicago will counter with 25-year-old lefty Clayton Richard, who is 2-4 with a 6.94 ERA. Richard lost his second straight start last Tuesday against Toronto, as he gave up five runs and five hits in four innings.
Richard has never faced the Yankees.
Elsewhere on the milestone front, Alex Rodriguez needs one more home run for 35 in his 11th consecutive season, making him and Babe Ruth the only players in history to have 35 homers and 100 RBI in 11 separate seasons.
New York took two of three from the White Sox earlier in the year in the Windy City. The Yankees have also won six of their last eight at home in this series.
