(Sports Network) - Streaking veteran Roy Oswalt takes aim at a fifth straight win and extend his franchise-record scoreless innings streak in the process when the Houston Astros visit Dolphins Stadium for the first of three games with the Florida Marlins.
Oswalt, who's 8-1 in his last 10 starts, last lost when he dropped a 3-0 decision to the New York Mets on August 22. Since, he's beaten Cincinnati, the Chicago Cubs, Colorado and Pittsburgh, while allowing 13 hits and just one run in 33 1/3 innings.
He's not allowed a run since August 27, posting consecutive zeroes against the Cubs, Rockies and Pirates, tossing shutouts his last two times out, including a brilliant three-hitter on Thursday against the Pirates. Oswalt had blanked the Cubs over 8 1/3 frames before exiting that one.
His 32 1/3 scoreless innings streak broke the team mark held by J.R. Richard, who threw 31 consecutive scoreless innings from May 26-June 11, 1980.
Oswalt is 5-3 in 10 starts against the Marlins with a 2.85 earned run average in 66 1/3 innings.
Towering right-hander Chris Volstad starts for Florida and looks for his first win in six starts.
The rookie last won when he beat St. Louis on Aug. 12 in Miami, but has since gone 0-1 and allowed 26 hits and 11 runs in 26 2/3 innings.
More recently, he surrendered two hits and a run over three innings in the Marlins' 10-8 win at Philadelphia on Sept. 9.
He has never faced the Astros.
On Monday in Milwaukee, Ted Lilly threw a one-hitter over seven innings as the Chicago Cubs swept a two-game set against the Astros with a 6-1 win.
Just one day after Carlos Zambrano's first no-hitter for the Cubs in 36 years, Lilly (15-9) didn't give up a hit until Mark Loretta got Houston's only hit of the series, a single in the seventh inning. He finished his outing with one walk and nine strikeouts to win his second straight start.
Loretta got the only hit while David Newhan drove in the lone run of the series for the Astros, who had won six straight before the two losses to Chicago. Brian Moehler (11-7) was saddled with the loss as he was charged with five runs on six hits in five-plus innings of work.
The loss dropped Houston to 2 1/2 games behind Philadelphia and Milwaukee for the NL Wild Card spot.
This series was originally scheduled for three games, but both Friday and Saturday's matchups were postponed due to Hurricane Ike in the Houston area so both contests were moved to Milwaukee's Miller Park. If a third game is needed from the Cubs and Astros, a September 29 contest will be played at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
On Sunday in Miami, Alfredo Amezaga had two hits, including a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored as the Marlins plated seven runs in bottom of the eighth inning and held on to edge the Washington Nationals, 8-7, sweeping the three-game series.
Dan Uggla finished with two hits, a pair of RBI and two walks, while Jorge Cantu chipped in with a two-run double for the Marlins, who have won five in a row.
Anibal Sanchez was effective in seven innings, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on four hits but got a no-decision. The young right-hander struck out seven and walked three. Andrew Miller (6-9) got the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Arthur Rhodes earned his second save of the season.
Houston took two of three from the Fish earlier in the season.
