(Sports Network) - A pretty good pitching matchup is on tap this afternoon at Fenway Park where Jon Lester and the Boston Red Sox will play the finale of their four-game series against Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Lester has been incredible of late for the Red Sox, going 4-1 over his last six starts, while surrendering one run or less in all but one of those outings. He defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, as he scattered six hits over 7 2/3 scoreless innings to run his record to 14-5 on the year, while lowering his earned run average to 3.23.
The 24-year-old left-hander's only hiccup of late, though, came at the hands of the Blue Jays, who battered him for seven runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings back on August 23. He is 0-1 in three starts against the Jays with a 4.24 ERA.
As good as Lester has been for Boston, Halladay has been even better for Toronto, going 18-10 with a 2.77 ERA. Halladay will be pitching on three days' rest today, though, after losing to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.
Halladay, who leads the majors with eight complete games, had won his previous five starts before the setback in the Windy City.
The 31-year-old righty beat the Red Sox the last time he faced them and is 11-11 lifetime against them with a 4.51 ERA in 35 games, 32 of which have been starts.
Boston remained two games back of the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, as it split a day/night doubleheader with the Jays, falling to A.J. Burnett in game one, 8-1, before picking up a 7-5 win in the nightcap.
Burnett (18-10) earned his 18th win of the season in the first game, while Travis Snider smacked a three-run homer and drove in five to lead Toronto to the win.
The second game saw Boston rally from three down, as Jed Lowrie drove in two and Jacoby Ellsbury knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis also knocked in a run, while Jason Bay and Dustin Pedroia each collected three hits and scored once.
Justin Masterson (6-4) got the win after pitching a scoreless inning of relief. Jonathan Papelbon recorded the final three outs to earn his 37th save. Starter Bartolo Colon struggled, allowing seven hits and five runs -- two earned -- over six innings.
Toronto has now lost two of three after winning 11 of 12 entering this series.
The Blue Jays have won eight of 14 meetings with Boston in 2008 and have even performed well at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox have compiled an excellent 51-22 record this year. However, Toronto has split its eight matchups as the visitor in this year's season series.
