(Sports Network) - The National League East-leading New York Mets will try to hold onto first place in the division when they close out a three-game series versus the Atlanta Braves at Shea Stadium.
The Mets have won four of their last five games and split a doubleheader with the Braves on Saturday for a 2 1/2-game lead over Philadelphia in the standings. Mets young prospect Jonathon Niese recorded his first major league victory with eight shutout innings to lead the club to a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes each finished with three hits and a home run, while David Wright also went deep for the Mets, who rebounded from a 3-2 setback in the opener of the twinbill. New York will hand pitching duties over to Oliver Perez on Sunday, and he is 10-7 with a 4.15 earned run average. Perez is 3-0 over his last seven starts, with the Mets going 6-1 over that span.
The lefty, though, was lucky not to factor in his previous outing on September 9 versus Washington, as he gave up seven runs in just 3 1/3 innings of a 10-8 win. Perez is 6-4 with a 3.46 ERA in 12 lifetime matchups with Atlanta.
Atlanta had a four-game winning streak stopped with last night's loss in the second test of the doubleheader. Starter Jo-Jo Reyes absorbed the loss after he gave up four runs on five hits in a season-low two innings on the mound. Casey Kotchman and Jeff Francoeur each had two hits for Atlanta, which won the opener on Omar Infante's sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning.
Jorge Campillo will take the hill for the Braves today and he is 7-7 with a 3.70 earned run average this season. Campillo is winless (0-3) in his last six trips to the mound with back-to-back no-decisions. In a 5-4 win over Colorado the last time out on September 9, the righty yielded three runs in 6 1/3 frames.
Campillo is 1-0 in two career games (one start) versus the Mets. He has yet to allow a run against them in eight total innings of work.
Atlanta is 8-6 against the Mets this season, but is just 2-6 at Shea Stadium. The Mets swept the Braves in a three-game series at home from August 19-21.
