(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers will try again to resume their crucial four-game series at Citizens Bank Park, where both clubs are expected to square off late this afternoon.
Friday's scheduled game between Milwaukee and Philadelphia was postponed because of inclement weather. It will now be played as the second contest of a day/night doubleheader on Sunday at 7:35 p.m. (et). The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:35 p.m.
Milwaukee is currently three games ahead of both Philadelphia and Houston for the top spot in the NL Wild Card standings. The Phillies are also three games behind the New York Mets for NL East supremacy.
Ryan Howard has been on a tear for the Phils and will try to homer in a fourth consecutive game in the second test of a four-game series with the Brewers in South Philly. Howard set the tone in Thursday's 6-3 series opening win, connecting on a two-run homer in the first inning. He later added a run- scoring double to give him a major-league leading 43 homers and 129 runs batted in.
The 2006 NL MVP is hitting .417 (10-for-24) over a six-game hitting streak with four home runs and 10 RBI. He has scored a run in eight straight games, blasting six homers in that span.
Pedro Feliz added two hits and an RBI, while Carlos Ruiz drove in two runs in the win. That offensive output backed 45-year-old Jamie Moyer's effort. The left-hander, pitching on three days' rest, gave up three runs over 5 2/3 innings.
The victory snapped the Phillies' two-game losing streak and moved them within three games of the Brewers in the wild-card race. Philadelphia also crept within three games of the idle New York Mets, who lead the NL East.
The Phillies will try to close the gap even further today behind ace lefty Cole Hamels, who failed to deliver in a back spot last time out. Going for a three-game sweep of the Mets in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Sunday, Hamels was tagged for five runs (4 earned) on nine hits in just five innings.
He entered that start 3-0 with a 1.49 earned run average over his previous five outings, but fell to 12-9 on the season with a 3.12 ERA. The 24-year-old is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in four career starts versus the Brewers, losing to them on April 23 in Milwaukee after allowing five runs over seven innings while striking out a then season-high 11.
Manny Parra will try to fend off the Phils Saturday for Milwaukee. The southpaw, though, is just 1-5 over his last nine starts with a 4.76 ERA after a loss to San Diego on Sunday. He was let down by his defense, as Parra was charged with six runs over five innings, but only one of those runs was earned.
The 25-year-old is now 10-7 with a 4.03 ERA on the season after failing to pitch more than five innings for the third time in his last four starts.
Parra has faced the Phillies just once before and that came in a relief role on August 5 of last year. He actually picked up a loss on that day, yielding two runs on two hits and a pair of walks over one inning of work.
Milwaukee, which also leads the wild-card race by three games over Houston, fell 5 1/2 games back of first-place Chicago in the NL Central standings despite getting a two-run homer out of Prince Fielder in yesterday's loss.
It was Fielder's first long ball since August 13th, a span of 24 games between homers.
J.J. Hardy added a solo home run in the Brewers' fourth loss in five games, as starter Ben Sheets was blitzed for five runs over six innings. The setback for Milwaukee was in the opener of a 10-game road trip that comes on the heels of a 3-7 homestand.
These two teams split a two-game set in Milwaukee in late April in the only previous meeting this year.
