Game Two: Detroit - Zach Miner (8-4, 4.29) Chicago - Lance Broadway (1-0, 8.49)
(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox continue their push towards the postseason today with a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field.
This series was slated to get underway on Friday, but rain in the Chicago area made tonight's doubledip necessary.
The Tigers were picked by just about everyone to make the playoffs this season. However, things have not gone as planned and they will have to settle for playing the role of spoiler.
Chicago is lucky to still be sitting at the top of the division after losses in four of its last five games. It is certainly happy to see the Toronto Blue Jays leave town after dropping three of four to them, including Thursday's 6-4 setback.
Jim Thome clubbed a two-run homer, while Jermaine Dye added a two-run double in the loss for the White Sox, who own a one-game lead over Minnesota in the division.
The Twins fell to the Royals, 3-2, in 10 innings on Thursday.
Gavin Floyd (15-7) allowed four runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to take the loss, snapping his career-best five-game winning streak. He had been unbeaten in nine starts since a July 19 setback to Kansas City.
Getting the call for the White in the first game will be righty Javier Vazquez, who has lost three of his last four starts. Vazquez was tagged with the loss, despite a decent effort, on Tuesday against Toronto, as he allowed two runs and five hits in six innings to drop him to 11-13 to go along with a 4.29 ERA.
Vazquez lost to the Tigers the last time he faced them and is 5-7 in his career against them with a 4.93 ERA in 12 starts.
Detroit will counter with veteran lefty Kenny Rogers, who is 9-13 with a 5.49 ERA. Rogers hasn't pitched since September 4 against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when he lost his third straight start, surrendering six runs and eight hits in just two innings.
Over his last three starts the 43-year-old Rogers has been tagged for 18 runs in 14 innings.
Rogers is 16-10 lifetime against the White Sox with a 4.30 ERA in 57 games, 33 of which have been starts.
Detroit will hand the ball to righty Zach Miner in the nightcap. The Tigers have won each of his last four starts and Miner hasn't lost since falling to Tampa Bay back on August 1.
Miner, who is 8-4 with a 4.29 ERA, did not get a decision on Monday against the Oakland Athletics, despite getting pounded for eight runs and 11 hits in just 4 1/3 frames.
He is 2-5 lifetime against the White Sox with a 5.29 ERA in 13 games (four starts).
Chicago will counter in the nightcap with righty Lance Broadway, who will be making his second start of the season. Broadway is 1-0 with an 8.49 ERA in five games (one start) and last pitched an inning of relief of Monday against Toronto.
Broadway has never faced the Tigers.
The White Sox have won nine of their 15 meetings with the Tigers this season, including four of six in the Windy City.
