(Sports Network) - Right-hander Armando Galarraga will try to regain the form that saw him go unbeaten in eight straight starts today when the Detroit Tigers host the Oakland Athletics in the finale of a three-game series at Comerica Park.
Galarraga, a 26-year-old in his first full major-league season, fell to 7-4 overall with a loss at Baltimore on July 18, then proceeded to go 5-0 with three no-decisions over his next eight appearances through August 31.
He finally fell again on September 5 at Minnesota, when he dropped a 10-2 decision to the Twins after allowing three hits and six runs in six innings, walking six and striking out four.
Galarraga topped the Athletics once in the aforementioned streak, allowing eight hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 10-2 Tigers triumph on August 9.
Lifetime against Oakland, he's 1-0 in three appearances with a 4.66 earned run average in 9 2/3 innings.
For the Athletics, right-hander Sean Gallagher returns from a stint on the 15- day disabled list with right shoulder fatigue.
The 22-year-old Boston native, who came to Oakland in the July trade that sent Rich Harden to the Chicago Cubs, has made seven starts with his American League team - going 1-2 with a 6.55 earned run average in 34 1/3 innings.
He started the season with the Cubs and made 12 appearances - 10 starts - going 3-4 with a 4.45 ERA.
His July 11 debut with the Athletics ended in a 9-2 defeat of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but he's 0-2 in six starts since, including a pre-DL loss to Minnesota in which he was ripped for 11 hits and 10 runs in five innings.
The Twins won the game, 13-2.
Gallagher has never faced the Tigers.
On Tuesday, Rajai Davis had a pair of triples, drove in a run and scored twice, including the go-ahead tally during a two-run eighth inning, to lead the Oakland past the Tigers, 3-2.
Emil Brown lofted the go-ahead sacrifice fly for Oakland, which has won three of four. Starter Dana Eveland lasted six innings and yielded two runs on seven hits in the no-decision.
Joey Devine (5-1) got the win after throwing a scoreless seventh. Brad Ziegler earned his seventh save of the year after recording the final four outs, also escaping a jam in the ninth.
Edgar Renteria drove in both runs for the Tigers, who saw their three-game win streak halted. Starter Nate Robertson lasted seven frames and gave up a run on four hits while fanning six, but received a no-decision.
Fernando Rodney (0-5) took the loss after giving up a run on two hits while recording two outs in the eighth.
The Athletics swept a three-game set from the Tigers in Oakland back in June, but Detroit won two of three matchups between the teams at Comerica Park from August 8-10.
