(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continue their push towards the postseason with the second of three straight games against the Detroit Tigers tonight at Comerica Park.
The Angels moved one step closer to their fourth AL West crown in the last five years on Tuesday, as Torii Hunter went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and finished with three runs driven in to lead Los Angeles to a 5-4 victory.
Vladimir Guerrero also had three hits and scored once, while Mark Teixeira drove in the other run for the Halos, who reduced their magic number for clinching the West to seven.
With the score tied 4-4, the Angels manufactured the go-ahead run in the ninth off Fernando Rodney (0-4). Chone Figgins led off with a walk and stole second base before Garret Anderson moved him to third with a ground out. Teixeira then lofted a sac fly to center to plate Figgins.
Francisco Rodriguez then recorded the final three outs for his 54th save in 59 chances. He is now just three shy of tying the all-time record, set by Bobby Thigpen with the Chicago White Sox in 1990.
Angels starter Joe Saunders lasted 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits in the no-decision, making him now winless in his last six outings. Scot Shields (6-4) was charged with a blown save after allowing a run in the bottom of the eighth, but wound up getting the win when Anaheim scored in the ninth.
Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4, including a solo homer, and drove in three runs for the Tigers, who have dropped two in a row and seven of their last nine. Magglio Ordonez drove in the other run in defeat.
Chris Lambert, who was recalled from Triple-A Toledo prior to the game, lasted four innings for Detroit and gave up three runs on six hits for a no-decision.
Heading to the hill for the Angels tonight will be righty Jon Garland, who is 12-8 with a 4.54 ERA. Garland picked up the win on Thursday against Texas after he allowed five runs and eight hits in eight innings.
Garland did not get a decision against the Tigers the last time he faced them, but is 13-6 lifetime against Detroit with a 3.90 ERA in 25 starts.
Detroit will counter with righty Zach Miner, who has won his last three decisions. Miner picked up his second straight winning start Friday against Kansas City, surrendering a run and six hits in six innings to run his record to 8-4 and lower his ERA to 3.46.
Miner will be making his first-ever start against the Angels, but has faced them three times in relief without recording a decision.
Los Angeles has won five of its seven matchups with the Tigers in 2008 and has already locked up its eighth straight season series win over Detroit.
