(Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals have been unable to plate any runs in this series with Chicago, and today face a young hurler they failed to score against in his major-league debut.
With Lance Broadway set to take the hill for Chicago, the White Sox try to post their third straight shutout over the Royals and sweep a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.
Behind a solid start by Javier Vazquez on Tuesday, the White Sox blanked the Royals 9-0, and then followed that up with a 4-0 win last night. Mark Buehrle (10-10) threw seven shutout innings in that one.
Paul Konerko and Ken Griffey, Jr. each finished 1-for-3 with an RBI for the White Sox, who have won three of four and are 6-3 on a 10-game homestand that wraps today. Chicago is 41-19 as the host this year.
The win also helped the White Sox maintain their half-game lead over Minnesota for the top spot in the AL Central despite not having AL MVP candidate Carlos Quentin for a second straight game. Quentin is questionable for today's test due to a sore left forearm. He was hit by a pitch on Monday versus Boston and leads the league with 32 homers.
Broadway makes just his second career start today, but does so against a familiar foe. The 24-year-old righty made the first start of his big-league career on September 27, 2007 against the Royals. He won that game with six innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out eight.
He has pitched once this season, posting an out on August 11 against Boston.
The Royals managed just five hits in yesterday's setback, two coming off the bat of Billy Butler. Luke Hochevar (6-11) got tagged with the loss despite a solid start in which he allowed three runs on five hits in seven frames. However, Kansas City still lost for the sixth time in seven games.
The Royals started a nine-game road trip with this set and next play the New York Yankees. KC is 26-32 as the visiting club this year.
Kyle Davies goes for the Royals and had won two straight outings, including a win over the White Sox on August 2, before being lifted after just 2 1/3 innings in a loss to Minnesota on Friday. He gave up three runs on three hits and five walks that day.
Davies fell to 5-3 with a 4.66 earned run average on the season and has yet to lose this season on the road, where he is 2-0 in three starts.
The right-hander held the White Sox to three runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings last week and is 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA in three career starts against them.
Thome is 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer off Davies this year, while Paul Konerko has also gone deep off him.
The White Sox are 9-5 against Kansas City this season and have won six of the eight meetings between these divisional foes at home, including a three-game sweep at home on June 3-5. The Royals are just 9-27 at U.S. Cellular Field since the start of the 2005 campaign.
