(Sports Network) - Tampa Bay right-hander James Shields can reach double-digit wins for the second straight season today, when the Rays host the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a three-game weekend series at Tropicana Field.
The Rays head into Sunday with a three-game lead in the American League's East Division over the Boston Red Sox.
A 26-year-old Californian and a former 16th-round draft pick, Shields was a 12-game winner last season over 31 starts in his initial full stint in the starting rotation.
He got to nine wins this year with a July 23 victory over Oakland, but missed his first shot at 10 when he dropped a 3-1 verdict at Toronto on July 28.
Shields is 2-0 in a pair of career starts against the Tigers and is 7-1 in 12 starts at home this season.
Right-handed surprise Armando Galarraga goes for a 10th win for Detroit.
The 26-year-old made just three big-league appearances -- one start -- with Texas in 2007, but has been solid from the start for the Tigers, including wins in seven of his initial nine decisions.
He had a five-start winless skid between June 25 and July 18, but has since won two straight while giving up just eight hits and four runs in 12 1/3 innings.
Galarraga, who is 7-2 on the road this season, has never faced the Rays.
On Saturday, Evan Longoria finished 3-for-5 with a homer, double and three RBI, as the Rays downed the Tigers, 9-3.
Jason Bartlett had three hits and scored twice for the Rays, who have won four games in a row. Carl Crawford added a two-run single.
Andy Sonnanstine (11-6) gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one in six innings of work to collect the win for Tampa Bay.
Miguel Cabrera was 3-for-3 with a run batted in for Detroit, which has lost three straight. Placido Polanco drove in a run with a double and scored twice.
Kenny Rogers (8-8) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits with four walks and a season-high eight strikeouts over just 3 1/3 innings.
Tampa Bay won four of its seven meetings with the Tigers last season.
