(Sports Network) - Both the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies have halted long losing streaks in this current three-game series. The two National League West rivals go for temporary bragging rights tonight in the finale of this set from Coors Field.
The Padres won the opener of this series on Monday to snap an eight-game skid while running the Rockies' slide to eight games as well. However, it was Colorado's turn on Tuesday, as it halted its losing streak with a 4-0 victory behind a gem from Aaron Cook.
Cook (11-5) yielded just five hits and struck out four batters en route to posting his first career shutout. Garrett Atkins and Willy Taveras each had a hit and an RBI for the Rockies, who plated all four of their runs during the fifth inning.
Matt Holliday went 2-for-2 to give him a hit in five straight games and 16 of his last 17 tests. He is hitting .377 (29-for-77) in 21 games since returning from the disabled list from a strained left hamstring on June 10.
San Diego's offense went cold one day after posting a season high in runs (15) and hits (22) in ending its losing streak. Edgar Gonzalez and Brian Giles both had four hits on Monday but combined to go 0-for-8 last night.
Josh Banks (2-3) took the loss after he gave up four runs and six hits in five innings of a game that was finished in just under two hours.
The Padres will face Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez, who was tough on the home mound on June 21 but not so much in Detroit this past Friday. The right-hander downed the Mets at Coors Field behind eight innings of one-run, two-hit ball for just his second win of the season. However, on the road against the Tigers, Jimenez gave up four runs on nine hits over four innings of work.
The 24-year-old is 2-8 with a 4.71 earned run average this year and a solid 2-2 with a 2.82 ERA at home in 2008. Jimenez is 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA in four career starts versus the Padres, suffering both of those losses this season. He struck out 11 batters in a loss to San Diego on May 10.
Giles and Adrian Gonzalez have fared well against Jimenez this year, with Giles going 3-for-5 with two RBI and Gonzalez having a homer and three RBI.
The two will try to back Randy Wolf tonight. The left-hander has lost his last three starts, all against the American League, and control has been an issue. Wolf has walked nine batters over his last two outings after issuing just eight free passes over his previous seven starts.
The 31-year-old lost to Seattle on Friday, yielding three runs (2 earned) on eight hits and five walks over just 3 1/3 innings. He hasn't won since June 11 versus the Dodgers.
Wolf is now 5-7 with a 4.13 ERA in 17 starts this year and 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA in eight career outings versus Colorado. That includes a home win over the Rockies on April 15 in which he hurled seven shutout innings. He struck out nine on that day, getting Holliday, Taveras and Todd Helton twice each.
Wolf is also 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA in four career starts at Coors Field.
These two clubs have split eight meetings so far this year after Colorado went 11-8 against San Diego last season.
