(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners will try to complete the three-game sweep over the San Diego Padres when the two squads collide this afternoon at Petco Park.
Erik Bedard was supposed to give the Mariners that extra edge entering this season, but the southpaw has dealt with injures throughout the year and has yet to get on a consistent track.
The injury bug hit Bedard the last time he was on the bump, as the 29-year-old only lasted just three innings against the Atlanta Braves. Bedard did not allow a run while on the hill, but back spasms cut his outing short.
Overall, Bedard is just 4-4 and has not collected a victory since holding Boston scoreless through seven innings back on May 28th.
Earlier this season Bedard matched up against the Padres, and cruised to a 4-2 victory. He tossed eight strong innings in that one, allowing only two runs, while striking out an impressive 10 batters.
The Padres will turn to Jake Peavy in hopes of getting San Diego out of its recent skid. Since returning from the disabled list Peavy is 1-1 in three starts, and has seemingly not missed a beat.
The last time the hard throwing right-hander took the hill he was his usual dominant self, tossing six strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Peavy, who struck out six batters in the contest, did not factor in the 3-1 setback.
The 27-year-old has been lights out at home, posting an incredible 1.29 ERA in seven starts at PETCO Park. Unfortunately, he only has a 3-2 ledger to show for his efforts.
In his career against Seattle, the hurler has been sensational, collecting a 4-0 ledger in five starts to go along with an equally impressive 1.56 ERA. In 34 2/3 innings of duty against Seattle, Peavy has 27 strike outs against just four walks.
Last night, Adrian Beltre finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Carlos Silva earned his first win in more than two months, as Seattle topped San Diego, 4-2.
Silva (4-9), who had not pitched into the fifth inning in his past two starts, gave up just two runs on eight hits in seven innings, while striking out three for the Mariners, who have won four of five.
Silva had lost his past seven starts, but found good form to take his first win since April 17. Jose Lopez went 2-for-4, while Jeremy Reed had a double and RBI for Seattle.
Cha Seung Baek (1-4), meanwhile, gave up four runs on eight hits in five-plus innings to take the loss for San Diego, which has dropped seven in a row.
Tony Clark singled in a pinch-hit appearance and drove in the Padres' only runs. Khalil Greene and Edgar Gonzalez each collected two hits for San Diego.
Although Seattle has won the last two matchups, the Mariners are still just 15-26 away from home this season. As for the Padres, they have not given their fans much to cheer about, posting a 21-25 ledger at PETCO Park.
