(Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals try to continue their dominance of the National League this evening when they play the second of three games against the St. Louis Cardinals at Kauffman Stadium.
The Royals are tied with the Minnesota Twins for the best record against the Senior Circuit this season at 13-3 and have won six straight and 11 of their last 12 games, all against the NL.
That trend continued in the opener of this 1-70 rivalry on Friday, as Alex Gordon drove in four runs and Gil Meche tossed seven superb innings, helping Kansas City to a 7-2 win .
Gordon homered and doubled, while David DeJesus extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Meche (6-8) was masterful, allowing only six hits, including Troy Glaus' lead- off homer in the seventh. Meche walked one and had two strikeouts to win his third consecutive start.
KC's recent run includes a three-game sweep over the Cardinals from June 17-19 in the previous edition of this I-70 rivalry, which saw the two clubs split six games last season.
Joel Pineiro (2-4) took the loss, surrendering all seven runs on 10 hits through 7 2/3 frames to remain winless since April 29.
Glaus was 3-for-4, knocking in both Cardinal runs, but St. Louis dropped its third in a row.
Kansas City will pin its hopes tonight on righty Kyle Davies, who is 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA, but is coming off an atrocious outing in his last trip to the hill. On Sunday against the San Francisco Giants Davies was hammered for five runs and six hits in just 1 1/3 frames.
Davies defeated the Cards two starts ago, holding them to a run and five hits in seven innings in his only other appearance against them.
St. Louis will counter with 24-year-old righty Mitchell Boggs, who is 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA. Boggs earned the win last Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, as he allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
He has never faced the Royals.
