(Sports Network) - Sinker-ball expert Brandon Webb tries to regain the form of his early season tonight when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit Miami's Dolphin Stadium for the middle test of a three-game series with the Florida Marlins.
Webb began the season with nine straight victories, but has since dropped four of six decisions, including a 3-1 loss at Florida on May 21. He allowed six hits and three runs over seven innings in that outing, walking none and striking out seven.
He strung two more wins together on May 31 and June 6 to improve to 11-2, but is winless in three subsequent starts, allowing 21 hits and 12 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings against the New York Mets, Oakland and Minnesota.
He's 3-4 in seven lifetime starts against the Marlins with a 4.85 earned run average in 42 2/3 innings.
Florida youngster Andrew Miller was successful in his first meeting with the Diamondbacks on May 22.
He scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings, walking one and striking out nine in the Marlins' 4-0 victory.
He's 1-3 in six starts since, however, including a 7-1 loss to Oakland on June 22 in which he gave up seven hits and four earned runs in four innings.
The Gainesville, Florida native is 2-3 in eight home starts with a 5.09 ERA in 40 2/3 innings.
On Friday, Ricky Nolasco threw eight strong innings, and the Marlins continued their dominance of the Diamondbacks with a 3-1 win.
Nolasco (8-4) struck out nine and held Arizona to one run on six hits with one walk, moving to 7-1 in his last 10 outings. Jorge Cantu hit a two-run double and Cody Ross homered for Florida, which stemmed a season-high tying four-game losing streak despite being outhit, 6-4.
Micah Owings (6-7) left with an apparent leg injury after surrendering three runs on four hits in four-plus innings, with six strikeouts and two walks.
Edgar Gonzalez, Leo Rosales, and Chad Qualls combined for four perfect innings in relief, but the offense couldn't solve Nolasco as the Diamondbacks dropped their third straight, and their sixth in seven games.
The Marlins have beaten the D-backs in all four meetings this season, all in Florida, and have held the Arizona lineup to a total of four runs in those games.
