(Sports Network) - Rookie Eddie Bonnie will make his third career start when the Detroit Tigers open a three-game interleague series versus the Colorado Rockies this evening at Comerica Park.
Bonnie debuted on June 14 in a 12-7 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning his first major-league game despite allowing six runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings of work. The right-handed Nevada product then took the hill last Friday in a 6-2 loss against San Diego, but did not factor in the outcome. Bonine held the Padres to a pair of runs and six hits in seven frames.
Tonight, he will get a taste of the Rockies for the first time.
Bonine will try to keep the Tigers rolling on Friday night, as the ballclub owns a 14-4 mark over the last 18 games. Detroit opened a six-game homestand by winning the last two contests of a three-game series versus the St. Louis Cardinals.
In Thursday's 3-2, 10-inning victory, Curtis Granderson had a big day at the plate for Detroit and also scored the game-winning run on a bases-loaded walk issued by Cardinals reliever Mike Parisi.
Granderson was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and Clete Thomas knocked in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who are 22-17 in the Motor City this season and 10-5 against the National League in 2008. Detroit is 110-98 all-time in interleague play.
Detroit starter Nate Robertson scattered 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings and gave up just one run with five strikeouts and two walks in a no-decision. Bobby Seay earned the win in relief with a scoreless 10th inning.
Colorado has dropped four in a row and was just swept in three games by the Kansas City Royals to open a six-game road trip. It suffered a 4-2 setback in the series finale on Wednesday.
Brad Hawpe went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for the Rockies, who are 12-28 away from Coors Field in 2008. Colorado starting pitcher Aaron Cook was dealt the loss, permitting four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Colorado is 7-5 against the American League this season and 83-92 all-time in interleague action.
Ubaldo Jimenez will try for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when he takes the mound tonight for Colorado. Jimenez posted his first win since April 8 his last time out on Saturday versus the New York Mets, hurling eight strong frames of one-run ball in a 7-1 victory.
Jimenez was 0-6 in 13 starts between wins and improved to 2-7 with a 4.52 earned run average in 16 contests this season. The right-hander, who is 0-5 with a 6.75 ERA in eight road starts in 2008, has never faced the Tigers.
These teams are meeting for the first time since the Rockies won two of three games from Detroit at Coors Field during the 2005 season. Colorado has won seven of its last eight matchups with the Tigers.
