(Sports Network) - Kyle Lohse takes aim at his seventh straight winning start this evening, when his St. Louis Cardinals continue their three-game series with the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
Lohse, signed by the Cardinals right near the end of spring training, has been sensational for St. Louis this season, having gone 9-2 with a 3.63 earned run average. He extended his unbeaten streak to eight games Friday against Boston, when he allowed two runs (1 earned) and six hits in six innings.
Over the course of his six-start winning streak, Lohse has surrendered just eight earned runs.
The 29-year-old right-hander is 7-6 lifetime against the Tigers with a 5.74 ERA in 19 games, 18 of which have been starts.
Detroit will counter with a surprising righty of its own in 26-year-old Armando Galarraga, who is 7-2 with a 3.03 ERA. Galarraga won his third straight start on June 18, when he allowed just two unearned runs and seven hits in six innings against the San Francisco Giants. He has not given up an earned run in either of his last two starts.
Galarraga has never faced the Cardinals.
In the opener of this set on Tuesday, Brendan Ryan went 3-for-4 with a two-run double and a run scored, helping St. Louis to an 8-4 win. Yadier Molina went 3-for-5 and scored twice for the Cardinals, who have won three of their last four.
Braden Looper (9-5) allowed seven hits and four runs in six-plus innings, striking out three and walking one to get the win.
Gary Sheffield returned from the disabled list and belted a two-run homer for the Tigers, who lost for just the second time in their last six tries and only the fourth time in their last 16 games.
Detroit's Kenny Rogers (5-5) gave up nine hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings, fanning two and walking three to take the loss.
St. Louis and Detroit met in the 2006 World Series, which was won in five games by the Cardinals. The Tigers, though, exacted a measure of revenge with a three-game sweep of the Cards in Detroit last season and have posted wins in six of the last seven regular-season matchups between the teams.
