(Sports Network) - A terrific pitching matchup is on tap this evening at Fenway Park, where the Boston Red Sox will host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of three straight interleague games between division leaders.
Josh Beckett will lead the defending World Series champions against Dan Haren and the Diamondbacks. Beckett is unbeaten over his last four starts (2-0), and defeated Cincinnati the last time out on June 15 at Cincinnati with seven shutout innings of six-hit ball in a 9-0 victory for AL East-leading Boston.
The right-hander is also tough to beat on the road, as he sports a 4-0 mark and a 4.81 ERA in five trips to the visiting mound. Beckett has faced Arizona five times in his career and is 1-3 with a 5.65 ERA.
Haren, meanwhile, is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA over his last four trips to the rubber. In his most recent start on June 18 versus Oakland, Haren allowed one run and four hits through seven quality frames of an 11-1 rout of the A's to improve to 7-4 with a 3.26 earned run average in 15 starts this season.
Haren is a rough 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA in six road starts this season for the National League West leaders. The righty is also just 1-3 with a 3.26 earned run average in five career outings against the Red Sox.
Arizona is 3 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division standings, but was just swept in three games at Minnesota to open a nine-game road trip. In Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Twins in the series finale from the Metrodome, starter Brandon Webb allowed five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits through seven innings to absorb the loss. Webb, who won his first nine starts of the season, is a subpar 2-4 with a no-decision in his last seven trips to the mound.
Conor Jackson was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Chris Snyder and Mark Reynolds had two hits and run scored each for Arizona, which has dropped six of its last eight games and is 15-22 as the visitor this season. The Diamondbacks will also visit the Florida Marlins for three games in South Beach on their current swing.
Boston is 1 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay in the AL East standings, and didn't help its cause by losing two of three games to the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend. The Red Sox salvaged the finale of the series with Sunday's 5-3 victory in 13 innings, as Kevin Youkilis hit the game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning to lead the way. Youkilis ended with a pair of home runs and three RBI for Boston, which is a solid 29-9 at Fenway Park this season.
Dustin Pedroia finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and starting pitcher Jon Lester allowed two runs on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings in the no-decision. Javier Lopez earned the win by recording two outs a scoreless 13th.
Boston won two of three games at Arizona last season from June 8-10. The D'Backs swept a three-game series in Beantown in the previous matchup during the 2002 campaign. That was Arizona's only trip to Fenway Park.
Arizona is 5-7 against the American League this season, while the Red Sox own an 8-4 mark versus the Senior Circuit.
