Houston Astros (34-41) at Tampa Bay Rays (44-30), 1:40 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays will try to win their 10th consecutive home series today, as they wrap up a three-game interleague set with the Houston Astros at Tropicana Field.

The Rays own one of the best home records in baseball at 30-12 and they have won nine straight series at Tropicana Field since losing two of three contests to the Chicago White Sox from April 18-20.

After dropping the series opener on Friday, the Rays used some late game heroics on Saturday to defeat the Houston Astros, 4-3. Pinch-hitter Gabe Gross had the game-winning, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth as the Rays rallied to beat the Houston.

Doug Brocail was on the hill to close it out in the ninth with the Astros holding a one-run lead, but surrendered a leadoff single to Cliff Floyd. Pinch-hitter Eric Hinske followed with another single, leaving runners on first and second, and pinch-hitter Dioner Navarro was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gross ended the game with a two-run double on a soft liner to left field, as Brocail (2-3) took the loss.

Carl Crawford and Justin Ruggiano each had two hits and an RBI for the Rays, who have won six of eight overall. Edwin Jackson started, went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits, but didn't factor in the decision. Dan Wheeler (2-3) took the win as he retired the last two batters in the top of the ninth.

Carlos Lee was 2-for-3 with a solo home run for the Astros, who have dropped nine of 10. Geoff Blum went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in defeat. Houston starter Wandy Rodriguez lasted 5 2/3 frames, but gave up two runs and five hits for the no-decision.

The Astros will send Brandon Backe to the hill today with hopes he can slow down the Rays. The right-hander has dropped three straight decisions and Houston has lost his last four starts overall.

On Tuesday, the right-hander was reached for three earned runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. He walked two and stuck out one in receiving a no-decision.

Backe, who is a dismal 1-6 with a 5.81 ERA in nine road starts this season, has never faced the Rays before. He was a member of Tampa Bay from 2002-03, compiling a 0-1 record with a 6.00 ERA in 15 appearances at Tropicana Field.

Opposing Backe will be Scott Kazmir, who is 4-0 with a minuscule 0.59 ERA in five home starts this season.

The hard-throwing left-hander was last in action on Tuesday, when he gave up one earned run and three hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs. He struck out seven and walked four, but did not earn a decision.

Kazmir has never faced Houston before, and he is 4-2 with a 4.89 ERA in 10 career interleague starts.

Houston swept a three-game set from the Rays the last time these teams met back in 2003.
