(Sports Network) - Fresh off the disabled list, Daisuke Matsuzaka is set to make his first start in nearly a month today when the Boston Red Sox continue a three-game interleague series with the St. Louis Cardinals at Fenway Park.
Matsuzaka came out of the gate quickly, as Boston posted wins in each of his first 10 starts. The right-hander, however, suffered an injury in his 11th start against the Seattle Mariners on May 27th and was placed on the DL a few days later. Prior to his rotator cuff injury, Matsuzaka led the league in victories with eight.
In a rehab start on Monday, Matsuzaka allowed two runs and three hits in five innings for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Matsuzaka, who is 4-1 with a stellar 1.60 ERA in five interleague starts, has never faced the Cardinals before. He is also a perfect 5-0 with a 2.48 ERA in six home starts this season.
Opposing Matsuzaka will be Mitchell Boggs, who is set to make his third career start today. The right-hander allowed two earned runs and five hits over five innings against the Cincinnati Reds on June 10th for his first career victory, but he was reached for four earned runs in only 4 1/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. However, he did not receive a decision against the Phillies.
Boggs will attempt to duplicate the solid effort put forth on Friday by Kyle Lohse, who silenced the Red Sox bats in a 5-4 triumph.
Lohse (9-2) allowed two runs -- just one earned -- in six innings to extend his personal winning streak to six straight starts. He gave up six hits and two walks, while fanning four.
Ryan Franklin recorded a two-inning save, his 10th of the season.
Skip Schumaker hit a two-run homer, while Yadier Molina and Jason LaRue each notched solo shots for the Cardinals, who snapped a three-game slide.
Julio Logo homered and recorded two RBI for Boston, which lost for only the second time in its last six games.
Tim Wakefield (4-5) was credited with four runs -- three earned -- en route to the loss.
Prior to last night, St. Louis' most recent trip to Beantown came during the 2004 World Series, with the Red Sox winning both Games 1 and 2 at Fenway en route to a memorable sweep of the Cards which gave the long-suffering franchise its first world title in 86 years.
The Cardinals did get a slight measure of revenge the following season, taking two of three tests from Boston at Busch Stadium in June of 2005.
