(Sports Network) - Greg Smith has an opportunity to make the organization that traded him away this past offseason pay when the Oakland Athletics hurler leads his new team into today's rubber match of a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Smith was a seventh-round selection by the Diamondbacks in the 2005 draft and spent three seasons in the Arizona system before being one of six prospects shipped to Oakland in the trade for All-Star pitcher Dan Haren back in December.
The 24-year-old lefty has been solid as a rookie for the A's so far. Through his first 13 major league starts, Smith has posted a 3.62 earned run average and allowed three runs or fewer in nine of those outings.
Smith has struggled some this month, with a 6.61 ERA through three June starts, but he was good enough to defeat San Francisco this past Friday. The LSU product worked around six walks in that game to limit the Giants to just one run over five innings.
He'll be trying to turn the tables on his former employers much like Haren did to the Athletics on Wednesday. The standout right-hander hurt his ex-club, both on the mound and at the plate, in Arizona's 11-1 rout of Oakland last night.
Haren (7-4) held the A's to one run and four hits while striking out eight over seven strong frames, and added a three-run double in the third inning to help Arizona rebound from a 15-1 loss to Oakland in Tuesday's series opener.
Chris Young added a three-run homer for the National League West-leading Diamondbacks, who snapped a three-game losing streak, while Stephen Drew went 3-for-5 with a two-run blast.
Arizona rocked Joe Blanton (3-10) for eight runs and seven hits, chasing the Athletics starter after just three innings.
Oakland, which had won four in a row coming in, received two hits and an RBI from Kurt Suzuki in defeat.
Doug Davis is set to take the mound for Arizona this afternoon and hopes for a little more run support than he received his last time out.
The veteran left-hander twirled seven shutout innings against Kansas City on Friday, but left with the contest still scoreless. Arizona eventually won by a 1-0 count on a Chad Tracy homer in the 10th inning.
Davis has been inconsistent in his five starts since returning from thyroid cancer surgery. He has yielded one earned run or less three times during that stretch, but also been hit hard in losses to San Francisco (May 28) and Pittsburgh (June 8).
The 32-year-old has had very good career success against Oakland. In eight lifetime games (6 starts) versus the A's, Davis is 6-1 with a 3.19 ERA and has won five straight decisions over today's opponent. He hasn't faced Oakland since the 2002 season, however.
Arizona swept a three-game series from the A's when these clubs last met back in Oakland during the 2006 campaign. However, the Athletics took all three matchups between the teams at then-named Bank One Ballpark from June 6-8, 2001 and are 6-2 over their last eight games in Arizona.
