(Sports Network) - Young right-hander Sean Gallagher will be seeking the first road win of his major-league career tonight when the Chicago Cubs visit Tropicana Field for the third and final game of a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Gallagher, who reached the majors and made eight relief appearances with the Cubs last season, is 0-3 in five outings -- three starts -- away from home in 2008, allowing 23 hits and 12 runs in 18 2/3 innings.
He won three of his first four decisions between May 16 and June 1 this year, but comes into this game having dropped consecutive road tests at the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays while combining to allow 10 hits and five runs in 10 innings.
He has never faced the Rays.
Tampa Bay calls on right-hander James Shields, who makes his first appearance since being suspended for six games after his involvement in an on-field brawl with the Boston Red Sox earlier this month.
He last pitched on June 10 against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, dropping a 6-1 decision after allowing 10 hits and six runs in eight innings. His June 5 outing at Boston was cut short by the fight, which occurred after he'd allowed three hits and four runs in just one innings of work.
Shields, who's 3-1 with a 1.72 ERA in 52 1/3 innings at home this season, has never faced the Cubs.
On Wednesday, Andy Sonnanstine threw five-plus innings to post his team- leading eighth victory of the season, as the Rays held off the Cubs, 5-4.
B.J. Upton, Eric Hinske and Evan Longoria had consecutive RBI singles during a four-run third inning for the Rays, who matched their season and franchise- record of being 13 games over .500 (42-29). They have won the first two of this series and four of five overall.
Willy Aybar also singled in a run in the third for Tampa Bay, which has won 24 of its last 28 games at Tropicana Field. The Rays locked up their ninth consecutive series win at home since dropping two of three to the White Sox April 18-20.
Sonnanstine (8-3) gave up seven hits and three runs, while walking two and logging four strikeouts to win his second consecutive start. The Rays have been victorious in 10 of the last 12 games the right-hander has pitched.
Carlos Zambrano (8-3) was lifted after surrendering seven hits and five runs -- four earned -- over 6 2/3 frames to drop his second consecutive decision. He departed the contest due to right shoulder discomfort.
Ryan Theriot drove in two runs and Geovany Soto belted a solo homer in the ninth inning for Chicago, which had won six of seven entering this series.
Chicago took two of three at Wrigley Field the last time these teams met back in 2003.
