(Sports Network) - With Chien-Ming Wang out until at least September, the New York Yankees need their starting staff to step up. After a strong outing from yesterday's starter, Darrell Rasner will try to get back in the win column tonight for the Bronx Bombers, who continue their three-game home series with the San Diego Padres.
Wang has arguably been New York's most consistent starter over the past two seasons, winning 19 games in 2006 and 2007. However, he suffered a torn tendon and a sprained Lisfranc ligament in his foot on Sunday and could miss the rest of the season.
That puts the pressure on the rest of the Yankees' rotation, which will try to get a win out of Rasner tonight. Rasner has been a solid contributor this year, going 3-4 with a 3.64 earned run average over seven starts since joining the club in early May.
Rasner, though, has lost his last four starts and is coming off his worst outing of the season. He gave up a career-high seven runs (6 earned) on nine hits over just 3 2/3 innings against Oakland last Wednesday in his shortest start of the year.
The right-hander has performed well in the Bronx this year, having gone 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA in three home starts. Rasner has never faced the Padres before.
New York has scored a total of seven runs in the last four games Rasner has started, but passed that total in Tuesday's 8-0 win over the Padres.
Jason Giambi hit a pair of homers and finished with three runs batted in, while Alex Rodriguez also homered for the Yankees, who have tied a season-high with five straight wins and are 5 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the American League East. Derek Jeter had a pair of RBI for New York.
Yankees starter Andy Pettitte (7-5) threw seven shutout frames, giving up just five hits while tying a season high with nine strikeouts.
The Yankees offense, meanwhile, continued to click, as the team has scored 29 runs over its last three games and is outscoring its opponents 35-6 over its winning streak.
That offense faces a tough challenge tonight in Jake Peavy, who makes his second start for San Diego since returning from a stint on the disabled list due to a sprained right elbow.
In his first start since May 14, the right-hander defeated the Dodgers at home on Thursday. Peavy pitched six shutout frames, yielding only three hits and no walks while striking out four. He showed little rust from his layoff, throwing 52 of his 72 pitches for strikes.
Peavy is 5-3 with a 2.64 ERA this year, but has a 5.40 ERA on the road. He will make his first-ever start at Yankee Stadium and lost his only other career appearance versus New York. He picked up that defeat despite holding the Yankees to a run on three hits over six innings way back on June 22, 2002.
Randy Wolf (5-5) tied his shortest outing of the season for San Diego in Tuesday's loss. He lasted just four innings and gave up seven runs -- five earned -- on six hits.
The Padres recalled top prospect Chase Headley before the game, and he went 2- for-4 out of the No. 6 hole in the batting order while playing left field. No other Padre had more than one hit and none of San Diego's seven hits went for extra bases.
The Yankees, who defeated the Padres in the 1998 World Series, have taken five of the seven-regular season matchups between the clubs. San Diego dropped two of three in its only other regular-season visit to the Bronx, back in 2004.
