(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees target their fifth straight win this evening when they open a three-game interleague series with the San Diego Padres at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees finished off a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a 13-0 thumping on Sunday at Minute Maid Park. However, they may have lost something far more valuable in the process.
Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, who picked up his eighth win of the season, had to leave the contest with a foot injury he sustained while running the bases. On Monday, New York's worst fears were realized when an MRI revealed a torn tendon and a sprained Lisfranc ligament in his foot.
Wang, a 19-game winner in each of the last two seasons, is likely lost until at least September and could very well miss the rest of the season.
Luckily, though, the Yankees' offense seems to be clicking at just the right time. Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer to key the rout on Sunday, while Johnny Damon had three hits and Jorge Posada was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer for the Yankees, who pounded out 15 hits in Sunday's win and outscored the Astros 23-5 in the series.
Andy Pettitte will hope for that same kind of support tonight, as he takes the hill trying to win his fourth straight decision. Pettitte defeated Oakland on Thursday, surrendering a run and five hits over eight frames to run his record to 6-5 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 4.64.
Pettitte has faced the Padres four times and is 3-1 with a 2.74 ERA against them.
San Diego will pin its hopes tonight on lefty Randy Wolf, who is 5-4 with a 3.83 ERA. Wolf, though, won his third straight decision on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he allowed a run and four hits over seven innings.
Over his last three starts Wolf has surrendered just three runs, spanning 20 innings.
Wolf, who will be making his first-ever appearance at Yankee Stadium, received a no-decision in his only other start against the Yankees.
The Padres, meanwhile, lost two of three to the Cleveland Indians over the weekend, dropping a 7-3 decision in Sunday's rubber match at Progressive Field. Khalil Greene had a pair of hits and an RBI, and Justin Huber had a run-scoring double for San Diego, which suffered only its third loss in the last 11 games.
Greg Maddux (3-5) surrendered five runs -- two earned -- on eight hits over six innings and struck out a pair without walking a batter.
San Diego is also expected to add top prospect Chase Headley to the roster prior to tonight's contest. Headley, who played eight games for the Friars last season, was hitting .305 with 13 homers and 40 RBI with Triple-A Portland.
The Yankees, who defeated the Padres in the 1998 World Series, have taken four of the six regular season matchups between the clubs. San Diego dropped two of three in its only other regular season visit to the Bronx back in 2004.
