(Sports Network) - Jamie Moyer tries to win his sixth straight decision this evening when the Philadelphia Phillies play the second of three interleague games against the Boston Red Sox at Citizens Bank Park.
Moyer had his best outing of the season in his last trip to the hill on Thursday against Florida, as he scattered two hits over eight scoreless innings to run his record to 7-3, while lowering his earned run average to 4.12.
However, the 45-year-old righty has struggled against the Red Sox over the course of his 22-year career, going 6-11 lifetime against them with a 6.69 ERA in 22 games, 20 of which have been starts. He is also winless in his last eight starts against them.
Boston will counter with left-hander Jon Lester, who is 5-3 with a 3.43 ERA. Lester won his second straight start on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles, surrendering a pair of runs and seven hits in seven innings.
Lester, who has never faced the Phillies, will have his hands full trying to slow down Ryan Howard this evening. Howard clubbed a pair of home runs and added an RBI triple, as Philadelphia pounded out an 8-2 win in the opener of this set. Howard finished with four RBI, and Jimmy Rollins was 3-for-5 with a solo home run, three RBI and two runs scored for the Phillies, who have won nine of their last 11 at home.
Howard has been on a tear of late, going 9-for-18 with four home runs, 13 RBI and seven runs scored in his last four games.
Cole Hamels (7-4) allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in seven-plus innings for Philadelphia. Chad Durbin tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
Boston starter Bartolo Colon (4-2) went just four innings before leaving the game due to back stiffness. The burly right-hander gave up four runs on six hits, including three home runs, with four strikeouts and two walks. He was replaced in the bottom of the fifth by Javier Lopez. Mike Timlin was victimized for four runs in just two-thirds of an inning.
Dustin Pedroia was 3-for-4 with a double and a solo homer for Boston, which had a two-game winning streak snapped. J.D. Drew added a solo home run. Manny Ramirez returned to the lineup after sitting out the last two with a hamstring injury and was 0-for-4.
Ramirez's 10 homers against Moyer are the most against any pitcher and the most off Moyer by a single batter. It is also tied for the most by any active batter against any active pitcher. Luis Gonzalez has also hit 10 home runs off of Greg Maddux.
Boston took five of the six matchups between these teams when they last met back in 2006 and has won nine of the last 11 meetings in this series. The Red Sox have also won six of their last eight games in Philadelphia.
