(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins shoot for back-to-back wins for just the second time this month as they play the second of a three-game interleague set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
On Friday the Twins, who are now in second place in the American League Central and 5 1/2 games behind Chicago, rebounded from a 12-2 pounding at the hands of the Cleveland Indians with a 10-2 thumping of their own versus Milwaukee in the series opener.
Justin Morneau and Alexi Casilla each drove in three runs for the Twins and starting pitcher Kevin Slowey contributed two hits and two runs batted in as he posted just his third win in nine decisions in 2008. Slowey, whose hits and RBI were the first of his career at the major league level, permitted just the two runs on five hits, striking out five while not allowing a single walk over eight innings of work.
Delmon Young went 3-for-4 after replacing injured starter Michael Cuddyer and Minnesota logged its second win in the last three. Cuddyer suffered a bone bruise on his right hand after being hit by a pitch and is currently listed as day-to-day.
Prince Fielder and Russell Branyan had four of the Brewers five hits with two each. Dave Bush was charged with his seventh loss in nine decisions after giving up three earned runs on 10 hits over the course of six innings for the Brewers as they had a brief two-game win streak snapped.
Now in his third season at the major league level, young hurler Glen Perkins shoots for a victory in his first-ever appearance against the Brewers tonight. The left-hander, who was used out of the bullpen in both 2006 and 2007 with the Twins, has failed to earn a decision in either of his last two starts.
On Monday Perkins permitted three runs on five hits, walking three and fanning three, over 5 1/3 innings in what became a 7-5 loss to the White Sox on the road.
While Minnesota opts to go with relative inexperience, 14-year veteran Jeff Suppan heads to the hill for the Brewers this evening. The right-hander, who is now with his sixth major league club, guns for back-to-back win for the first time in 2008.
Suppan's most recent outing took place on Sunday when he allowed just a single earned run on four hits and five walks, while striking out three over 5 1/3 innings in a 3-2 victory over Colorado on the road.
Control continues to be an issue for Suppan, now that he has almost as many bases-on-balls (36) as he does strikeouts (42) through 78 2/3 innings this season.
For his career, Suppan is just 5-8 with a 5.12 ERA in 18 appearances versus the Twins.
As a team, Minnesota enters action tonight third in the AL with a .269 batting average and first in the league with 19 triples. However, while the club has certainly shown speed on the bases, it is tied with Kansas City for the fewest home runs in the league with just 43 through 68 games.
In his last five games Jason Kubel has done what he can to increase the team's power numbers with three home runs in 20 at-bats. The slugger has knocked in six and scored four times, while Morneau has a team-best seven RBI in the last seven games.
Despite hitting a collective .239 over the last six games, the Brewers seemed to have found their power stroke with a total of 10 home runs during that span. Corey Hart has belted three of those and, thanks to three doubles, has a total of seven RBI and has scored four times. Branyan may have had a couple of hits last night, but had just two others in the previous five games heading into the series opener for the Brewers.
These teams split six interleague matchups last season, with the Twins taking two of three games from the Brewers on the road at Miller Park.
