(Sports Network) - The National League West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks aim for their third straight win tonight as they host the Kansas City Royals in the second of a three-game interleague set at Chase Field.
Last night the teams needed more than nine innings to settle their differences and produce some offense, with Chad Tracy's walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning accounting for the only tally in a 1-0 decision.
Tracy had two of the team's five hits on the night, with Stephen Drew posting a pair of singles and a walk as well. Justin Upton walked three times to help offset the four strikeouts by Chris Young.
Arizona starter Doug Davis allowed six hits and four walks, while striking out seven over seven innings, with Billy Buckner picking up the win in relief. Yasuhiko Yabuta was saddled with the loss after surrendering the home run to Tracy. Kansas City starter Zack Greinke permitted a mere three hits in seven innings, yet he still provided Arizona with plenty of opportunities by walking seven batters as well.
Mark Grudzielanek had two hits and two walks for the Royals, while Alex Gordon and Joey Gathright also recorded a pair of hits in the setback.
Fresh-faced Luke Hochevar goes to the mound for the Royals tonight against Arizona. The Colorado native, now in his second year at the major league level, has gone almost a month without posting a victory and has taken part in a win just once in his last five outings.
On Monday Hochevar made it through six innings versus the Yankees, giving up just two runs on four hits and striking out four, yet still failed to factor into the decision as Kansas City secured the 3-2 victory.
While Hochevar is still in the hunt for just the fourth win of his career, Arizona's Randy Johnson continues to zero in on number 300.
The imposing left-hander, who is already an impressive 15-7 with a 2.92 ERA in 27 games versus Kansas City since breaking in with the Montreal Expos in 1988, still needs another 12 victories to reach 300 for his illustrious career.
Unfortunately, the five-time Cy Young Award winner has lost each of his last two starts and has failed to log a win since May 18 when he helped blank the Detroit Tigers. Most recently the Big Unit lasted 5 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh on Monday, allowing four earned runs on six hits and an uncharacteristic five walks, while only striking out three in the 5-3 setback.
In the five games prior to his meeting with the Pirates, Johnson had issued a total of just four bases-on-balls, while fanning 36 batters.
One of baseball's all-time leaders in strikeouts, Johnson, who has led his league in that category a total of nine times, needs just 17 more to reach 4,700 for his career.
Kansas City currently sports the lowest slugging percentage (.374) in the American League and is tied with Minnesota for the fewest home runs in the league (43) after 68 games. However, don't tell that to Jose Guillen who has four home runs in the last seven games for KC and has knocked in an incredible 12 runs and scored six times himself. Gordon has two homers of his own, but has plated a total of just three in the last six outings.
Built on speed, the Arizona hitters rank first in the majors in triples with 23 through 68 games, and yet the club is one of the worst hitting teams in the NL at the moment with a collective average of just .249. Displaying a rare combination of power and speed in the last week, Mark Reynolds has logged four home runs and the only triple in seven games for the Diamondbacks, resulting in 10 RBI and six runs scored.
This is the first series between the two clubs since 2005 when Kansas City took two of three meetings on the road in the desert. Two years earlier it was Arizona that captured two of the three games played at Kauffman Stadium.
