(Sports Network) - Back on track after a three-game slide, the Chicago White Sox host the Colorado Rockies for the second of a three-game interleague set tonight at U.S. Cellular Field.
A.J. Pierzynski proved to be the difference as he drove in the game-winner in the seventh inning in last night's 5-4 win over Colorado. Juan Uribe drove in a couple of runs, while Orlando Cabrera and Brian Anderson both hit solo home runs for the White Sox in the victory at home.
Starting pitcher Gavin Floyd failed to earn a decision as he gave up four runs on four solo home runs in 6 1/3 innings. Reliever Matt Thornton was the beneficiary of Pierzynski's home run in the seventh, earning his third win in four decisions.
The victory was the ninth in a row at home for the Sox, the longest streak for the club in more than two years.
Ian Stewart had two solo homers while Brad Hawpe and Willy Taveras each had solo shots for the Rockies in their second loss in as many games. Starter Jeff Francis was charged with four runs on five hits in six-plus innings of work, while Matt Herges was saddled with the loss.
The Rockies appear to be ready to hand the ball to Jorge De La Rosa for tonight's contest. Now with his third team in as many years, De La Rosa has yet to produce a winning season during his major league career and is 10 games under .500 (16-26) entering the weekend.
The left-hander has just one win in four decisions in 2008, the most recent of those outings coming a week ago when he appeared for one inning in relief versus Milwaukee and managed to retire the side without incident.
De La Rosa, who carries a career ERA of 6.06 into this meeting, already has one win in as many appearances against the White Sox.
As for Chicago, it is prepared to hand the ball to John Danks for his first- ever appearance versus the Rockies.
The left-handed Danks, in just his second year in the majors, surrendered five runs -- four earned -- in six innings versus Minnesota on Monday. The Texas native allowed eight hits and walked three, while striking out four, but failed to earn a decision in what became a 7-5 win for the Sox.
A starter in four of the last five games in which he's played, Stewart has three home runs for the Rockies, but those are the only hits for him in his last 14 at-bats for the NL West's last-place team. Thanks to eight hits over the last six games, Garrett Atkins has knocked in five and scored seven times for Colorado.
The White Sox are now tied with Texas for the most home runs in the AL (86), even though Chicago is hitting just .257 through 68 games. Nick Swisher has been swinging a big bat for the club in the last week with three home runs and a total of eight hits in 22 at-bats. As a result, the center fielder has knocked in eight runs and scored eight times himself.
Needing some help with his swing is Carlos Quentin with just four hits in 27 at-bats over the last week of play.
Thanks to last night's decision, the White Sox are 108-89 all-time in interleague play, while the Rockies have fallen to 78-89 mark against the AL.
