(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners aim to build off Monday's encouraging road victory when the American League cellar-dwellers continue a three-game set with the struggling Toronto Blue Jays tonight at the Rogers Centre.
Seattle posted a hard-fought 10-inning win over the Blue Jays in last night's series opener, with Miguel Cairo's sacrifice squeeze bunt bringing home the go-ahead run in a 3-2 triumph.
R.A. Dickey (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the win, while J.J. Putz worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the 10th to notch his seventh save.
An error by Mariners right fielder Wladimir Balentien and a single by Toronto's Rod Barajas put runners at the corners with none out in the Jays' half of the 10th. Brad Wilkerson then drew a walk to fill the sacks, but Putz got Lyle Overbay to bounce into a 3-2-3 double play and later retired David Eckstein on a fly ball for the final out.
Jose Vidro added a two-run homer for Seattle, which had lost six of seven coming in and improved its poor season road record to 9-22.
Toronto lost for the seventh time in its last nine games.
Alex Rios went 3-for-4 for the Blue Jays to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. The outfielder is hitting .333 (14-for-42) over that stretch.
Toronto will turn to Dustin McGowan tonight in hopes of breaking out of its recent doldrums. The talented right-hander has excelled when pitching in front of the home crowd this season, having amassed a 3-1 record and a 1.93 earned run average in five starts at the Rogers Centre.
McGowan has also won two straight decisions, although he wasn't overly sharp in Thursday's start at Yankee Stadium. He was tagged for five runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings against New York and wound up with a no-decision in a 9-8 Toronto loss.
The 26-year-old has faced Seattle four times previously, twice as a starter, and owns a 1-1 record with a 3.24 ERA against the Mariners.
Carlos Silva will attempt to end a string of six straight losing decisions when he takes the mound for Seattle this evening. The disappointing offseason acquisition did throw eight innings against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this past Wednesday, but was still dealt another loss after allowing five runs on eight hits.
Over his last seven starts, Silva has gone 0-6 with a 9.77 ERA. The right- hander has not won in nine mound trips since downing Oakland with seven innings of one-run ball on April 17.
Silva is also just 2-3 with a 6.25 ERA over five lifetime matchups against the Blue Jays and has lost both his career starts at the Rogers Centre, where he has surrendered 12 runs (10 earned) over a combined 11 innings.
Monday's contest marked the first 2008 encounter between these teams. The Mariners lost in five of their six games played at the Rogers Centre last year and are just 5-12 in Toronto since the start of the 2005 season.
