(Sports Network) - Matt Holliday is expected to return to the Colorado lineup tonight as the Rockies begin a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field.
Holliday, the reigning National League batting champion, has been out of action since May 24 due to a left hamstring strain. After leading the NL with a .340 average last season, he returns to Colorado still leading the club with a .321 average.
The outfielder also has eight homers and 26 RBI this year, and his injury hasn't appeared to slow down his hitting stroke. In three rehab games with Triple-A Colorado Springs, Holliday went 6-for-10 with a homer and three RBI.
Holliday becomes the latest injured Rockie to make his return. Brad Hawpe came off the 15-day disabled list on Friday after missing time with a hamstring ailment, and has homered in two of his three games back while driving in six runs. Also, pitcher Luis Vizcaino is back after battling a shoulder injury.
However, the club still remains without infielders Troy Tulowitzki and Clint Barmes.
Colorado had a four-game winning streak halted with Sunday's 3-2 loss to Milwaukee. Chris Iannetta went 1-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored for the Rockies, while Garrett Atkins doubled and scored a run. However, the Rockies were just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 men on base.
Aaron Cook goes for the Rockies and has sandwiched two outstanding outings around a very horrid one. Cook beat the Mets on May 25 with a complete-game effort that saw him allow just a run. However, against the Cubs five days later, he was tagged for seven runs and 10 hits in a no-decision.
Cook then improved to 8-3 with a 3.16 earned run average on the season after defeating the Dodgers on Wednesday. The right-hander gave up just a run over eight innings while also striking out six.
Cook's eight wins this year by far lead the staff, as no other pitcher on the Colorado roster has more than two victories.
The 29-year-old defeated the Giants at home on May 20 and is 5-7 with a 4.51 ERA in 16 starts and five relief outings against them for his career.
Cook will have to contend with a Giants club that has won seven straight on the road. That includes a recent four-game sweep of the Nationals in Washington.
San Francisco outscored Washington 25-6 in the series, but managed just five hits in Monday's finale. However, it was enough for the Giants to record a 3-2 victory. Randy Winn went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Matt Cain tossed 6 1/3 strong innings.
Cain (3-4) allowed a run on eight hits and struck out six for the Giants. Brian Wilson recorded the final four outs for his 18th save, tying Chicago's Kerry Wood for most in the National League. Bengie Molina went 2-for-5 with an RBI double, while Ray Durham doubled and scored twice.
Giants rookie John Bowker enjoyed a solid series, smashing a pair of homers while driving in seven runs.
After making his last two outings in relief, Pat Misch returns to the San Francisco rotation tonight. The left-hander has tossed four scoreless innings of relief in that time, including a scoreless inning versus Washington on Saturday.
In his last start, Misch fell to 0-2 after giving up five runs (4 earned) on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work in a May 31 loss to San Diego. His ERA actually went down to 6.39 after that outing and has since dropped to 5.79.
The 26-year-old got a no-decision against the Rockies on May 19 after he gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings. In three career games -- including one start -- against Colorado, Misch has a 3.72 ERA without a decision.
The Giants have won four of six against the Rockies this year, taking two of three in Colorado from May 19-21.
