(Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays hope a visit from the team with baseball's worst record helps the slumping club break out of a recent funk.
Toronto continues its current homestand tonight with the first of three consecutive meetings with the lowly Seattle Mariners from the Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays had lost six times in seven games prior to Sunday's 5-4 victory over the visiting Baltimore Orioles. Vernon Wells, playing for just the second time since being activated off the disabled list, went 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored to lead the way for Toronto.
Marco Scutaro knocked in two runs to help the Blue Jays avert a sweep of their three-game set with the Orioles, while Rod Barajas doubled twice and had one RBI.
Roy Halladay (8-5) grinded through 7 2/3 innings to earn the win, with the Toronto ace giving up four runs on eight hits but striking out seven. B.J. Ryan, who had blown his last two save opportunities, retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the season.
The Blue Jays will try to make it back-to-back wins when they face a Seattle squad that owns a major league-worst 22-41 overall record and is a horrid 8-22 on the road this season.
The Mariners did manage an away win over the mighty Boston Red Sox on Friday, then proceeded to lose the next two tests of their weekend series with the defending world champions. In Sunday's finale, Seattle mustered just three hits against Justin Masterson and three Boston relievers and was dealt a 2-1 defeat.
After Masterson (3-0) yielded just one run and three hits over the first six innings, Craig Hansen, Hideki Okajima and closer Jonathan Papelbon allowed only one Seattle hitter to reach base over the final three frames.
Sean Green (1-2) took the loss for the Mariners after surrendering a tie- breaking solo homer to J.D. Drew in the bottom of the sixth inning. Starter Erik Bedard held the Sox to one run and just two hits, but was removed after just five innings due to a high pitch count and the excessive heat in the Northeast.
Seattle has now dropped six of its last seven games and figures to face a challenge tonight from the Blue Jays' Jesse Litsch. The young right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.97 earned run average in five home starts this season.
Litsch also had won five consecutive decisions overall before getting roughed up by the New York Yankees on Wednesday. In that game, the 23-year-old was tagged for four runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings in Toronto's 5-1 loss at Yankee Stadium.
The second-year major-leaguer had thrown 16 scoreless innings over his previous two starts, including a complete-game seven-hitter against Kansas City at the Rogers Centre on May 24.
Litsch faced the Mariners in Toronto last July and received a loss after permitting four runs and issuing four walks in a shaky 4 1/3 innings.
Seattle will hand the ball to the struggling Jarrod Washburn, who brings a 2-7 record and an ugly 6.56 ERA into tonight's matchup. The veteran southpaw suffered his third straight losing decision in a 4-2 setback to the Angels on June 2, with Washburn allowing four runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings in that game.
Washburn, who hasn't posted a victory since May 5, is 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA in seven road appearances (6 starts) this season. However, he did deliver a solid six innings of two-run ball in a no-decision at Yankee Stadium in his last away start, which came back on May 25.
The 33-year-old also does not have good career numbers against Toronto, having compiled a 2-7 record with a 5.16 ERA over nine previous starts versus the Jays.
Tonight's contest marks the first 2008 encounter between these teams. The Mariners lost in five of their six games played at the Rogers Centre last year and are just 4-12 in Toronto since the start of the 2005 season.
