(Sports Network) - Joba Chamberlain's transition to the starting rotation continues this afternoon, as the New York Yankees will send the young phenom to the hill against the Kansas City Royals in the third contest of a four-game set at Yankee Stadium.
Chamberlain's first major league start failed to live up to the hype on Tuesday, as the 22- year-old did not make it through the third inning. Chamberlain threw 62 pitches in 2 1/3 innings, and allowed two runs on one hit with four walks.
He is expected to throw between 70 and 75 pitches this afternoon.
As for the Royals, they will send Zack Greinke to the mound. Since grabbing his fifth win of the season back on May 18th, the right-hander is 0-2 in his last three outings.
The last time Greinke was on the hill, he was tortured by the White Sox, and eventually lost by a 9-5 margin. In the setback, the 24-year-old allowed eight runs on nine hits in just six innings of work.
Earlier this season, Greinke was brilliant against the Yankees, as he held the Bronx Bombers scoreless through eight innings, scattering six hits, while striking out two batters. Unfortunately the young hurler has not enjoyed the same kind of success against the Yanks throughout his career, posting a 2-2 mark in five starts, to go along with a whopping 6.10 ERA.
Yesterday, Johnny Damon capped a 6-for-6 day with a game- winning RBI single in the ninth inning, as the Yankees twice erased four-run deficits in a wild 12-11 win over Kansas City.
Damon drove in four for the Yankees, who have won three of four. Mariano Rivera (2-1) gave up a solo homer to David DeJesus in the top of the ninth, but took the win. Andy Pettitte was ripped for career-high 10 runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi, and Jorge Posada all homered for the Yanks, who rapped a season-high 19 hits.
The come-from-ahead loss ruined a career day for Jose Guillen, who homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in a career-high seven runs. Joakim Soria (0-1) took the loss for letting up two runs in the ninth after starter Brian Bannister surrendered eight hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings for the Royals, who have dropped four of five.
The Royals have fared very poorly at Yankee Stadium over the years, having amassed a 4-23 record as the visitor in this series since 2001.
