(Sports Network) - Kyle Kendrick tries to stretch his unbeaten streak to 10 starts this evening when the Philadelphia Phillies continue their three-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.
Kendrick won his second straight start on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds, as he allowed four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings to run his record to 5-2 to go along with a 5.00 earned run average.
The 23-year-old righty, who is 2-0 lifetime versus the Braves, is 4-0 over his unbeaten stretch and has not lost since falling to the Houston Astros back on April 16.
Atlanta will pin its hopes tonight on a 23-year-ol hurler of its own in lefty Jo-Jo Reyes, who is winless in his last three starts. Reyes received a no- decision on Monday against Florida, surrendering three runs and five hits in six innings of his team's 7-5 win. He is 2-3 on the season with a 4.78 ERA.
Reyes lost to Kendrick and the Phils earlier in the year and is 0-1 in two games against them with a 5.40 ERA.
In the opener of this set on Friday, Shane Victorino knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th and threw out the potential tying run in the bottom half, as Philadelphia rallied for a 4-3 win.
After the Phillies tied the game in the ninth, pinch-hitter Chris Snelling led off the top of the 10th with a double. So Taguchi entered as a pinch runner and Jimmy Rollins bunted him to third. Victorino then gave the Phillies the lead with an RBI triple to center field. Royce Ring relieved Manny Acosta and Chase Utley's RBI double made it a 4-2 game.
In the home half, Brad Lidge struck out Brian McCann before Josh Anderson singled to left. Gregor Blanco then bunted for a base hit to put runners on the corners, and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Greg Norton went down on strikes, but Yunel Escobar singled to center. Victorino, playing shallow, charged the ball and threw a strike to catcher Chris Coste, who applied the tag on the left knee of Blanco to finish the game.
Starter Jamie Moyer allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings for Philadelphia, fresh off an impressive 8-2 homestand. Tom Gordon (5-2) tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the win, and Lidge converted his 16th save of the season.
Victorino tripled twice and scored two runs for the Phillies, who are 13-4 in their last 17 games. Utley drove in two runs.
Tim Hudson was masterful on the mound for Atlanta, limiting the Phillies to one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings of work. Blaine Boyer blew a save in the ninth, while Acosta (3-4) was saddled with the loss.
McCann clubbed a two-run homer for the Braves, who have dropped two of their last three games. Chipper Jones went 2-for-3 with two walks, raising his average to a league-best .421.
Atlanta is now just 3-17 in one run games this season.
Jones is 7-for-11 (.636) with a homer, two doubles, three runs scored, two RBIs and four walks versus Philadelphia this season. He is also hitting .500 with a home run against Kendrick.
Philadelphia won two of three games at home against Atlanta from May 13-15 this season.
